I heard about that on the news this morning.
Did he even release a single last year???
I admit I gave up on mainstream country years ago so I'm way out of the loop.

I watched it last night. It was like driving by a car wreck and not being able to look away.

I asked myself the same question!
Google tells me he released a song earlier this year called "Dive Bar" with Blake Shelton. Never heard of it.

I hadn't even heard there was an awards show on... That's how much I follow current country.
I do respect Garth, don't listen to him, but he seems likeable enough.

And of course the underlying unsaid truth that is the primary concern; how much money can we make.

The award seems like a publicity stunt.

I run into Garth every once in a while. He lives not far from me and he goes to the Chick-Fil-A nearest me from time to time.

Last time I saw him we talked about Big 12 football. He’s an OSU grad of course, and I’m a Longhorn fan, so we always have fun with that.

I did not watch that much. I turned it off when Blake shelton won an award for God's Country, which is one of the stupider songs I've heard in a while

Didn't like him back in the day and still don't. Definitely overrated.

Well, compared to the artificial, algorithm-driven cheese-pop being hilariously foisted as "country," Garth Brooks at least has a small amount of legitimate country music mixed in with all the the other ingredients. IMO, most of the stuff marketed today as "country" is genuinely anti-musical. Fake, mercenary, stupid... I remember being at a concert featuring Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and the Osborne Brothers. I'm not in love with any of those acts (well, the Osborne Brothers, probably...) but it was enjoyable because it was reasonably authentic. Now, it isn't. It's just obnoxious pop with a hat and boots.

A mediocre Garth song is a pretty great song <opinion>...
A friend and I joked (several nights ahead) that “Dive Bar” would win.

Yeah when I saw him on the show I wondered what he's been doing lately? Apparently way more than I was aware of. But, I don't listen to mainstream country at all.

I have no idea since I'm bit out of touch with the contemporary country music scene, but I was assuming that there had been a bit of a changing of the guard. By the way, I'm not that familiar with his music. I think he plays in Vegas a lot and that's kind of my litmus test for whether an artist is falling off the map or not.

Yeah, I saw an interview with him once and he seemed like a nice guy.
