When I was in my early 20's I lived in Walsall (In the black country near Birmingham) for a few years and started picking up that accent, I had to move before it stuck! :D

My wife’s accent is like the southern guy’s; she simply cannot pronounce “oil” other than as “all.”

One of my daughters-in-law is from Yorkshire, and it’s a real treat to hear her vocalize in an unguarded moment, especially when she is expressing anger or frustration.

Though I am a fluent English speaker, I still enjoy the YouTube channel, “English with Lucy.” Here’s a sample:

LOL. It is a wonder I ever got anywhere or anything done overseas---thankfully, there are many people who speak English a great deal better than the three or four words I can get out in the local tongue. Languages are a gift.

American French students "speaking in French".

I can't understand most of what they're saying without reading the translations, and I don't think you can either.

Come to Yorkshire, the English don't understand us, unless we want them to.

Yes, my step father is from Yorkshire. I grew up the strains of: "Ee, ecky thump, I'll go to t'foot of our stairs," etc.

Sending out love to the Parisians in the OP message. My French sucks (and I'll be gigging tonight). Anytime anyone French tries their English with me it's a deep relief. A significant amount of French people have at least a little English. And that percentage is much larger than in the UK or the US.
