I pretty much disagree with the premise -- a lot of junk in the 80s but a ton of influential and unique players.

How are we forgetting this guy?

Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine)

Adrian Belew (Crimson, Talking Heads, Bowie, Laurie Anderson, etc.)

Reeves Gabrels (Tin Machine, Bowie, The Cure, etc.)

These guys defined experimental guitar in the 80s and 90s, and each was always identifiable strictly by their idiosyncratic style.

They were all pretty great, but I would argue the most influential guitarist for Siouxsie & the Banshees was John McGeoch

I have to step away from the keyboard. So many great guitar sound makers in the 80s

Welll...the directive was a "distinctive sound of their own"....
Farris was masterful with edge of a pick scrapping a wound string through a multitude of effects...sort of thing.

It's a sound that will clear the sinuses...

I have a cassette tape of a friend of mine playing the riff that Keith Scott played on Run to You, done 2 years before Run to You was released , we met Keith Scott at a mansion in West Vancouver called "Stanmore" , where My firiend and I were jamming , Keith Came in and joined us , Jeff my friend was running that riff , and low and behold it ended up on that song , as this was Jeff's riff I left it to him if he wanted to persue it but I still have the cassette in my archives

I've always read that Bryan wrote many of the riffs, including that one specifically.

not so , Jeff showed it to Keith, I was there when Keith came in and Jeff was playing the run , Keith asked Jeff "what are you doing there ?" and Jeff showed him we jammed for a few hrs then we left. I dont recall seeing Bryan at that party but we stayed really close to the music room , as a matter of fact one of the guys had a 60's jazzmaster and he ended up buying my 65 BF super reverb from me , some of these guys there that night were from "The Pointed sticks" a punk band from that era

the recording I have is from 2 years ealier recorded at my house with just Jeff and I

Jeff was one of these rare talents that could pick up any instrument at any time and make music , he once picked up my sitar untuned and started playing christmas carols on it , I couldnt stop laughing for hours,

Bryan was in a band called Sweeney Todd , but would hang out side recording studios in Vancouver with his guitar to see if he could pick some tracks ,
Bruce Allen Talent picked him up and signed him on, this was the start of his solo career ,
Bryan could write vocal and musical hooks like no bodies business and that album is still my favorite of his. Vancouver had a ton of talent at that time .

I guess Bryan did write the tune and lyrics ,it is the opening guitar riff I am refering to .

I always liked Robbie McIntosh's sound and approach during that time. Here's a sterling example:
