I grew up on Long Island and the family was from Brooklyn.
    Egg creams loomed large.
I haven't even HEARD the phrase "egg cream" for a very long time.
Are these still a thing in NY or have they gone the way of Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray and peanut butter and salami sandwiches?
If I take the fam to NY, where would I get one?

Pardon my Texan ignorance, but what is an egg cream?

It’s a type of milk shake made from milk, seltzer water, and chocolate syrup. There’s no egg and no cream and there’s none to be found where I am.

Some of my earliest memories are of going shopping with my mother and stopping at the counter at Woolworth's for an egg cream.

I'm partial to creme eggs. I don't know what egg creams are.

They still exist. A few years ago an 85-year-old neighbor who grew up on the Lower East Side took me to a place that has "the best egg cream in town" in the East Village. I think it was Ray's Candy Shop, but I'm not certain because I waited around the corner in the illegally-parked car while he went inside and bought them.

It was my first and only egg cream and I'm not a fan, but he enjoyed the hell out of his.

I used to get them at the corner candy store.
    I miss the old Bronx.

I had one when I was a young man visiting family in Boston. Perhaps they were from NY originally . It was quite refreshing but I don’t ever recall seeing them offered anywhere since.

The best egg creams I ever had were at the candy store in East Rockaway LI near the corner of Main St and Rhame Ave. It's probably long gone unfortunately.

I can personally vouch for Eddie's in Queens

20th Century establishments are the exception in Manhattan, you'd have a lot more luck finding açai than an egg cream.

Also, Cel-Ray hasn't gone anywhere, it's still here. It's just not there, because it never was.

I had one the other day from a hot dog truck in Levittown. The guy got grumpy when I asked for it sweet, he said "I only make 'em one way" It was good, but the way he went on, you'd think it was a cure for cancer.

On Anthony Bourdains last show he goes out for an egg cream in the LES/ East village. So they must still exist, but I’ve never had one. I did have that Lou Reed record. I thought it was awful.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

egg creams have gone the way of the passenger pigeon and the dodo bird, most people under 45 and outside NYC probably don't know what they are or have never had one

You don't think soda jerks from other places in the 50s and earlier made them?

I've never heard of them, but I don't think it would appeal to me as I'm not much of a fan of carbonated water.

I was thinking this is about eggnog liquor.
