The guitars I'm using are a 1985 MIJ '52 RI with Duncan NoCasters and complete Callaham hardware upgrade and a lightly modded (hardware & PG only) CV Tele. My amp is a black 2003 Fender Blues Jr. with BillM mods. What pedals would I need to get to approximate the overall tone on his songs like "Streets of Fire," "Candy's Room." "Adam Raised a Cain," "Human Touch" "Leavin' Train"....well you get the idea. Compressor?? TS9 Tube Screamer?

I think I read in Musician magazine that around the time of "The River" tour, Bruce had 2 Teles and the modified Esquire into a pair of Peavey tweed Classic 50 4x10 Bassman type amps and was using an MXR Distortion + for solos.

I don't buy that list on that uberproaudio site, did you see the huge list of guitars he has supposedly played? Um, 99% of the time his electrics have been a Tele. Or maybe a Tele. Unless he was playing a Tele.

I've never heard any compression or flanging in his tone, he keeps it pretty basic. Your guitar/amp combo should get you pretty close. I'd say a Tele -> cranked amp with some sort of OD to boost the leads would about do it. Not a tube screamer though, his leads don't have that mid-boosted tone. Add a bit of slapback delay now and then (in the 70's he used an echoplex) and you're there. Of course he has a pretty ferocious attack which is a big part of his tone.

IMO looking for pedals to cop someone's tone is a dead end, especially if they have always been pretty much a guitar -> amp sort of player.

+1 - yeah, I never saw the Boss with a Les Paul either.

Just hit them strings hard! You'll be right there!

Check out the YouTube below of Bruce's guitar intro to "Prove It All Night" from a 1978 show at the old Cap Center in Landover, MD. He IS visibly using stomp boxes. I just want that tone SO badly... As far as the uberproaudio site list goes, what they did was put down a list of every guitar that Bruce has ever been photographed holding since his start with The Castiles in the mid-60s. Obviously, 99.999% of his electric work has been on his signature Esquire / various 50s Teles. I'm just trying to figure out what he's using to get the tone in this video...his intro solo begins at the 2:24 mark.

No big mystery there. Sounds to me like a smooth, mid-humped OD. Tons of those out there. No idea what HE'S using, but I can get that tone from my Fulldrive no problem.

For the record, I think Bruce is a VERY underrated player, and I love all this extending soloing he does live. He's always got great tone.

So would something like the MXR Distortion + M115 stompbox do it? What about a TS-9 type of box?

I've never played an MXR box, but I'd say and TS or TS variant would go a long way to getting you that tone. Keep in mind Bruce doesn't play his amps dead clean to begin with- he's got some breakup going on there already, THEN he adds the pedal on top.

Ha! I just saw you're in Freehold! How funny!

I was at that show sitting up close in record company seats and remember that he was still playing through the tweed bassman and in interviews at the time he said he was using an MXR distortion plus. I have one from the era and it does sound alot like that. Bruce does know how to make a guitar sing doesn't he.

Man, that's a great clip!

I still say a Tele into a cranked amp with most any od/dist box will get you there. The short delay is a big part of that tone too. My favorite OD box for that sound is the Menatone Foxy Brown. Putting that between my Tele and SFDR gets me all the classic 70's tones!

I'll second Ruger9 - there are literally dozens of boxes that will get you that tone. Of course those Bassmans are another part of the picture...

Now the real question here is who's sitting on the footage and why don't they release it? I love the Hammersmith DVD, I'd love to see a 78 show.

hey just to chime in here, I actually have some inside info, just trust me here.

Bruce was playing his tele body/esquire neck, but honestly any tele will get you there, but it's two 4x10 5F6A Bassmans (using EL34 powertubes.)
and a 1970's block logo MXR Distortion +. that's the lead tone, the pedal.
he also had a meastro EP3 echoplex during this time, as well as heavily during the born to run tours.

the only compression he used was on very early recordings, (listen to Thundercrack.) that's aslo where the univibes and chorus's are too...on songs like Santa Ana.

now, just FYI.... there's a pedal made by Frantone called the High Ball, it was made for another jersey kid in a band who admires mr. springsteen very much, and may or may not have had the High Ball designed to sound like bruce. trust me on this one. :)wink:)

good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I checked out the Frantone Hi Ball and while it seems like a really cool pedal, I could buy a new MIM Tele for the $380 price. I think I'll cruise eBay for the MXR Distortion +. Appreciate the 'inside' info.

Well, the MXR Distortion + arrived today from eBay and it gets me about 90% of the way there for The Boss's late '70s tone. MAJOR thanks to 52slapback for his insider insight.
