Ebony (or any other wood for that matter) won't change the sound of the guitar, but it will feel smoother as you're bending notes, etc.

I'd put money down that you couldn't tell the difference between a recording of rosewood/maple/ebony.

the real question is: which one do you like the look of?

The more important question is, which one do you like the feel of?

all of this sonic wood recipe/formula hoopla is for the birds though.

I built my "dream tele" not long ago. The body is from an mij ri, since it was the only way I could get a white double-black bound, and the neck is an American elite compound just like my strat. Seymour Duncan pickups. It sounds amazing and plays like a dream. Ebony fretboard are great.

Ebony feels great on a guitar neck, but there are so many other factors that will affect tone more than just having an ebony neck. You could give the same guitar to five different players and it would very probably sound different each time it was played.

Given that there have been so many variations of Teles over the years (humbuckers, Strat pickups in the middle, Bigsbys, ect...), I guess an ebony fretboard is fine...At what point is a Tele no longer a Tele?

An ebony fretboard on a tele would be an incentive to buy it in my case. It's the most attractive and durable fretboard IMO. I have one on my 1974 Les Paul Custom and I love it.

I've got a Fret-King with an ebony board.

Kinda hard to tell how different it would sound from a 'stock' Tele because it's not set up anything like one. Plays real nice, though.

Mine sounds great. Bright, yes, but not anymore than my maple, and has a good tight bass response. Not sacrilege.

Nice Tele, great body finish! What are those position markers on the fretboard?

Yes, my Franken-Tele has an ebony fretboard, part of a compound radius neck I ordered from Warmoth. I love it.

David Hidalgo loved it too ;)

Taken 9 years ago?! Jeez time flies...
