I've seen this appear on P&W sheet music a few times. Doesn't E2 automatically mean you suspend the 3rd? So "no3" is redundant?

Or am I missing something?

Cheers

Gosh...time to dig out some theory...

I guess if you were playing in G/em the third would be an "assumed" minor third by the listening ear. Depending on whether the tune is in E/c#m or G/em (or a number of other relative keys) the 2nd could resound to either a major or minor 3rd.

I think a lot of people like the ambiguity of a chord sans 3rd simply because the added 3rd could be pushing a certain degree of "obviousness" or "explicit/forced tonality". Case in point: I find that strummie E-chord openings to "Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord", "Let Eveything That Has Breath", as well as "Heart of Worship"(D Major) sound yummy without the 3rd included at all, and although a resolution to the (major) 3rd doesn't cause any damage, they sound just fine without them...The aforementioned first 2 tunes actually have the major 3rd included in the opening lead melodic riff, which takes care of business just shnazzy, eh? I like to play those songs (maybe it's just a alto-ranged-girl thing) in dropped DADGAD with a drony-sound, often with or without major 3rd. Sounds fresh to the listener, and hardley distracts one from the worship... except me the player, maybe!

The spelling for an E2 (no 3) chord is: E, B, F#.

So the difference is that you move the 2nd up an octave? I guess that's an inversion I play quite a bit now that I think about it. I play those suspended chords high on the neck a lot depending on what the keyboard is doing.

so as above: Bsus/E

or even sillier: E11(no 3, 7, b9)
