Anybody here using a DVR for OTA broadcast TV? We're cancelling the cable and I'd like to continue recording some things to watch later. I've seen the Tablo system but it's not getting star reviews. The TiVo is five to six times more expensive. Just looking for someone using one.

My hunnie uses a DVR to catch HDTV broadcasts on the Grit channel because she's a huge fan of all the classic westerns.

It amazes me just how crisp and pristine most of these old films look (resolution and color). They could've been made yesterday.

Whatever you do, stay away from this one and any that look like it (the same under different brands)! I went though 4 of these and gave up as they all broke. Find one with better reviews.

Not this one!

A friend uses a Tablo and likes it a lot since cutting the cable.

We cancelled cable (and similar services) 20 years ago, and I have been using this device to record OTA for at least the last 5. This can record 2 channels simultaneously. I believe the company has since come out with one that can do 4 channels, but this one suits my needs just fine. It must still be selling well, because I see it listed as “Amazon’s Choice” when you search on there. I mostly use it to record live sports. I also bought their USB-Live2, which allows you to record analog sources (e.g. VCR, old camcorder, etc.) to digital video files.

Well, I disconnected all the cable stuff yesterday. We bought a Tablo for the DVR. It's not getting GREAT reviews, but for $80 I figured we'd try it. So far, so good. $500 for a TiVo is more than I want to spend. My antenna reception is great. We get 87 HD channels with better picture and audio than we were getting with the cable. It had gotten to where the picture would pixilate and the audio would break up, even did it on recorded stuff.
