Dumb question - what can a compressor pedal do in a gig setting and why would you want or not want to use one?

You can imagine someone mixing a record is not going to use the same gtr comp setting for every song and most studio comps have a few more controls than the average gtr pedal comp. So there's no one size fits all setting, maybe if you're only using it on slide [ or like readjusting it often to suit the song ] but just the difference in picking attack from funk to lead to light arpeggios. That makes multiple comps make more sense aside from the stacking. They can be useful but sometimes once you really hear it you can't un-hear it, not everyone's cup of tea for sure!

I use especially in a very live room to smooth out the sound especially competing with drum symbols and snare.
Just a minimal amount of compression is used. It is almost like a clean boost which is another use of the pedal.
Otherwise mainly stick with the normal amp sound unless a notion comes about to use it.
