I just replaced the strings on my sheraton a few days ago and the low e string already sounds dull. All the other strings sound new and bright but the low E sounds like it needs changing already. I have probably only played on them for 2 or 3 hours. Maybe I'm just hearing things but it also sounds like I have a phaser on when I hit the E string open.

Could this just be a bad string out of the pack? Is it an issue with the guitar?

If it helps the strings are ernie ball 10's. Advice would be appreciated.

    Has this ever happened before?

Sometimes, raising the Pole Pieces in the pick-ups can help.

I’ve had the core stretch on a new wound string before. Usually bronze acoustic strings, but I’d think it could happen to nickel wound steel too.

Yeah, that. What @String Tree said. Sometimes a string can get twisted, separating the winding or maybe just not be perfectly manufactured. It can happen but shouldn't happen all the time. I'd bet against the string before I bet against the guitar.

Sounds dull acoustic or sounds dull through your rig?

I've never noticed it before. I'm using the same gauge and brand of strings I always do. I didnt adjust the pickups .

I tried applying a little pressure behind the nut to see if that might be the issue. No change. And it sounds dull all along the fretboard.

I feel like maybe a got a bad string but it's never happened to me before so I have no frame of reference.

The winding on the string by the bridge looks like it is separating from the core a little.

Ok, it’s probably something mechanical with the string, the bridge, or the nut. That excludes your amp, cable, and any pedals.

That's what I'm gonna try first. Hope that's the solution. It was the last pack I had at the house though so guess I'm gonna take a trip to the music store this week

Bad string. It happens. It’s made by humans and therefore susceptible to pre-failure

Same exact gauges of strings in your string set that you usually use? Check gauge of strings.

I ended up with a weird low-E string recently. It doesn't sound in tune when it's in tune, it has this hollow, dissonant, drone-y sound. Doesn't matter if it's open or fretted, it sounds off. I need to change it but then I'll have a set with no low-E, so I'm just going with it until I change the whole set. Never happened before.

This is why I buy at least 3 sets of single strings when I get around to buying them. I can pick my gauge for custom sets, and don't have to worry about busting another set if one breaks or is bad. Also, I've found the low E string tends to be low tension for its gauge and going up one or two gauges lets it sing for a bit longer.

Or that could be me hearing with my eyes (tension charts are hypnotizing...) instead of my ears, dunno yet. Seems to work for me so far.

If it’s your normal gauge, type of string, etc & you haven’t changed anything physical, you’ve a dud string.

That happened to me recently and it was indeed the string. I had the same puzzled reaction because I never had that happen before. Changed the string (yep, low E) and all was well.

Put your old E string back on and see how it compares....
