Songs we grew up with (ages 10-25) tend to become such a part of who we are as an individual that we take this stuff quite personally.

Because it IS personal. It somehow feels like part of oneself has been stolen and used for other purposes.

Nothing weird about it.
Yeah. Hard to put words to these feelings. Levi's (clothing brand) had a TV ad where a really nice looking white Porsche was demolished for some dumb reason. My response was to stop dead - haven't owned anything Levi's in the 40 years since. You don't punch a guy's mom in the nose and you don't destroy a Porsche for no genuine reason.

The exec who thought that this ripoff (although "paid for") was a good idea, is part of the reason General Motors' market share just sinks and sinks and sinks. Don't pee on the baseball and don't spit on the apple pie.

"Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet" they shoulda stopped with this one.

I understand how you feel but it's the same thing as Ozempic singing " Oh oh oh it's magic". They do it to catch your attention. Changing "Drift Away" just takes it to a higher level.
