I want to draw a black only drawing on a pine guitar body and I was wondering what are different ways to do this?

Should I use black sharpie or oil paint or some other kind of paint? Do I draw directly on the bare wood or is there a base I should lay on the body first, as I'm going for a natural wood finish? What can I use as a transparent top coat over the drawing?

Thanks for your help!

I think this all depends on what you want it to look like. My default answer would be to lay down a coat of clear coat, wet sand it level, then you could use acrylic. That's a pretty friendly way to go, plenty of resources at art supply stores. Just make sure the clear coat is something compatible with acrylic. This way it won't bleed or permanently stain if you screw up, you can sand off the base clear coat. Then protect it with clear coating over it.

A Sharpie will fade out pretty quickly.
Let me know if you find something that doesn't.

Sharpies WILL FADE. The Son of the Dohcaster is going to have an alcohol ink design on it, and I did an extensive amount of investigation on it before committing to what inks I will use. Sharpies use a cheap ink that is not color fast.

I recommend paint pens if that is the direction you want to go.

Also, use a Karmar (?) clearcoat as a protective layer over top as this will not smear the ink when applied.

I did a white enamel undercoat as a background.

Just thought I'd throw this out there before you get too far.

For several years I've been trying to summon the courage to do a woodburned image of Simple J. Malarkey on my blueprint tele, Ol' Simple.

I have a woodburning pencil, but I'm afraid of screwing it up. Mistakes are hard to hide, with woodburning.
