more from the "Men are from Mars, Women are from some other place we will never understand" Department -

conversely, many men are quite happy when a woman just shows up.

Unless the man is married and the woman is not his wife.

Stuff happens. You're about to leave you house and you get a call you have to deal with. Or you get stuck in traffic. Or your car breaks down. Really, when someone says, "I'll be there at 7:00" they mean if all goes well.

My wife and I were on the way out the door for dinner on our anniversary when a delivery truck shows up with our new kitchen cabinets that weren't supposed to show up until the next morning. We had a reservation for a specific table and I didn't want to be late so I helped the guy unload the truck as quickly as possible. So we take off and figure we will still be there on time so don't bother to call before we leave. There ends up being a fender bender on the highway so things slow up a bit. We end up arriving 5 minutes late and they had already given our specific table to someone else. This is several years ago before I ever owned a cell phone.

What's the point? Well, I guess a couple quick phone calls would have prevented this from becoming my contribution to this discussion.

Jerry : We made the date for lunch and he said "Want me to call to let you know I'm on my way ?"

I told him no - just show up.

George : So what happened ?

Jerry : The next day I just get to the restaurant, sit down, order a soda and he called .

George : He called ? What did he say ?

Jerry (flustered, waving arms) : "I'M ON MY WAY !" HE SAID "I'M ON MY WAY !"

Elaine (scrunched face like she smelled something bad) : Why didn't he just show up ?

Jerry : I don't know - he wasn't late but he haaaaad to call and tell me "I'm on my way..."

Kramer enters, sliding sideways through the door.

    All : Kramer !

George : Hey Kramer, if you're going to meet someone for lunch and you weren't late (all roll their eyes) would you call to say you were on your way or would you just show up ?

Kramer (whipping his head around to look at George) : Oh no no no Georgie - I'd just show up. Or I wouldn't. But call ? Why would you call when you're going to show up ! You just show up ! Or don't ! But call ? Why would I call ?!

Kramer walks over to Jerry's fridge , opens it , leans inside and scans...

Kramer : Uh Jerry, speaking of lunch...

I figured those people were just calling to give me the head's up so I could get out of bed and find the bathrobe before they showed up.

Or: They think they need to call to alert you to the above; having just finished changing out of their bathrobe before calling you.

"Stuff" rarely happens. "Stuff" is most often someone not getting ready on time or trying to get things done that they should have done earlier. If real "stuff" happens, I'll call. Hardly ever need to.

Some people show up late to meet you and call beforehand because they know what a curmudgeon you are.

Well yeah, if they are going to be late, then calling is appropriate. If they are on the way and going to be on time, then calling is a waste of time.

I like it when my wife calls to let me know she's leaving her office. Then I have time to clean up, take a shower, and erase the internet history.

Then again, there's the call going in the opposite direction.
    Example:
One of my kids (now 18 & 20 yrs old) call me to ask if I can pick them up somewhere and drive them somewhere else. I say 'yes, I'll be there in 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic'.
8 minutes later, while I'm in the car negotiating said traffic, I get the call: 'WHERE ARE YOU????'

That one I resent pretty fiercely.

It really depends on who is calling.

I wouldn't mind a call from a cute yoga instructor saying she was "on her way".

    DAMN! :(

You see...there IS an upside to getting older...

If I was a member of the young generation today, I think I would jump off a cliff.
