Who was born in a house full of pain?
Who was trained not to spit in the fan?
Who was told what to do by the man?
Who was broken by trained personnel?
Who was fitted with collar and chain?
Who was given a pat on the back?
Who was breaking away from the pack?
Who was only a stranger at home?
Who was ground down in the end?
Who was found dead on the phone?

Who was dragged down by the stone?
Who was dragged down by the stone?

I would say some of the most depressing lyrical content of all time. But that solo in the middle is my favorite gilmour moment. So stern

Agreed on all counts. Sometimes the more painful and stern pieces are the best.

Oh...I thought it was a Yoko Ono song about women.

Great song indeed. I used to play a cover of Dogs with my first band back in Glasgow (1982 / 83), although sadly I fear with only an approximation to the verse chords: we didn’t realise Gilmour wrote the song in Em and played it — on record and on the subsequent tour — on a Tele tuned down a whole step.
All 3 guitar solos are among Gilmour’s best, including the 3-part harmony rundown at the end of the third one: erased accidentally (?!) by Waters so that Gilmour had to go back in and record it a second time.

They aren’t questions, btw: they are descriptions of a character who is finally defeated by the system. Not entirely an opinion — here’s the original 1977 lyrics printed on the LP inner sleeve:

The way I think of it, there’s an implied “This song is about someone...” before that first “...who was...”.
