    Whoa, wait a minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you saying that anyone who has a modern-era Tele, and they say it has a nitro finish, that it doesn't really have a true nitro finish like the highly coveted vintage Fender's have?

I prefer hand wired amps over nitro finishes.
Guitars I do the finishing on I go with thin oil finishes though.

Five (5) Tele's: three (3) are Nitro and two (2) are Poly.

I've read conflicting info about my 1986 ASAT so I'm not sure. Might be nitro over poly. Whatever it is, it's very nice.

I think it's just coincidental, BUT my go to Tele, in my avater (home built), and my LP Special (DC/TV) are both nitro finish.

Currently poly, but if anything should ever happen to my Tele, I'd go with nitro, rosewood board, unpotted humbuckers. I base this on my SG Special Faded, which has a thin nitro finish and unpotted pickups, and sounds sublime. It's become my benchmark for good tone.

That seems to be leading the voting results.

My #1 Tele is Poly (so no model identification).

I only buy Poly finishes. Nitro holds no mystique, is a lot less durable, gets sticky, temperamental, scratches easy, and flakes off. Even though I like Relics (but again, in Poly).

Never thought of it before, but, every guitar I have has a Nitro Lacquer finish. Except my 71 P bass.
My number one does have a nitro finish. Its a 1960 Telecaster.

But it is pretty close jvin248, and as I noted earlier, several members #1 guitar was a Les Paul, and that's the only way it comes (that's why I wish I would have asked if your #1 Fender Telecaster (as this IS a Telecaster Forum :) ) had a Nitro or Poly finish.

My #1 is Kirn Signature Blackie with a nitro finish but the finish has nothing to do with why it's #1. My previous #1, a Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic, does not have a nitro finish.

I agree with VWamtele, I would have saved a lot of money if I would have just bought the '12 AV Tele that I now have. I can't imagine anything better. It's perfect in every way. Seriously, Fender nailed it. I don't know why they bother with CS models.

I try to keep as light of a nitro finish as I can get away with. Enough to give it some protection, but light enough so that the wood can breathe. Poly just doesn't do if for me. Too much plastic.

My #1 tele should be my AV52RI with nitro finish - love that thing! But....I think my MIM Classic 50s Esquire (poly) gets the slightest edge. I own 8 Strats and #1 may be my CS69 with nitro.....or is it the 50th Anniversary special edition model with poly? Too close to call. My overall #1 electric (at least right now) is probably my G6119 Gretsch Proline, which happens to have a poly finish. Almost seems like a trend, except the type of finish is not a big deciding factor for me(as long as it's well-done) nor do I think it is a major tonal determinant on electric guitars. OTOH, my two favorite acoustic guitars are Martins - with nitro finish. I do think type and thickness of finish is very important on acoustic guitars.
