Does this sound like a stock SF Champ in this video?

In this video of an interview of Joe Bonamassa, the amp is a silverface Champ miked in a bathroom.

Through most of the interview the amp is on V=10 (T about 8, B about 3.5), and the guitar volume is turned down.

See the amp and its control settings at 5:41, and hear a couple of seconds of both the amp and the guitar turned up all the way (and there's some trash as expected).

Then fast forward to hear some playing in various styles. I think it sounds great. My guess is that it has a cleaner than stock speaker installed.

Does it sound like a stock SF Champ to you?

It doesn't sound like any of the 3 or 4 Champs I've had. A couple thoughts:
-The bathroom is making it sound fuller and bigger.... and a little echo'y.
-Any of my champs with the stock tiny alnico speaker would sound like bacon frying at 4 on the dial much less 10. Gnarly.
-Even into a big EV15 and a 12 together my last champ didn't sound that good.
-It's a bit hard to find any real playing in that video, I didn't go through it. Found a couple 5 second bursts.

    That's what I think.
    Yeah, understood.
Clean speaker was my first thought.
Sorry. One good illlustrive sample is 26:18 through 26:34.

He shows that most of the time the guitar volume is way down.

    It's Bonamassa. But...

That sounds mighty aggressive for a stock Champ especially with the guitar volume rolled off. On the other hand a slightly modified SF Champ does that, easy.

    The Two Step Plan:

Step one, swap to an Allen Amps TO11S for extended frequency response and impedance match to an 8 ohm speaker.

Step two, hook it up to a better speaker.

An Eminence 820H will leave the stock speaker in the dust.

Yeah, that's what I had before I sold the last one to my Harp playing friend. Good little speaker. Doesn't change the whole amp character though. I'll take my 12 watt champ over the 5 watter any day!

Thank you. I might build one with that transformer.
My understanding is that a small speaker rolls off lows that the amp can't produce very well anyway, and I think the amp in the video has such tight apparent bass because we aren't really hearing any (poorly damped) 80Hz, and I think it hides this fact beautifully. It's also hiding a lot of the faux low notes that happen when two or more notes are played together (which sound great with amps that can produce them), and this is keeping it cleaner too.

And so, I might really try an 8"!

My Gibsons definitely sound like that through my SF Champ.

I've built two Vibro Champs, and worked on vintage ones. They are darker sounding than most blackface amps, but it kind of depends on the plate voltage and speaker. They have a low-end frequency response kind of like a blackface Princeton or Princeton Reverb, which is why you want to turn the bass way down. They don't have a lot of gain, but you can easily make for that with hot pickups or a boost.

I'm just blown away by the variety of sounds/tones/response achievable with that bare bones setup! I'm surprised by how a lot of folks tend to DIS joe B, but he's got the chops, skills and definitely understands tones and how to get them. I need to get/build some version of a simple Champ!

    I play bass now.
I started the thread because I'm providing guitar amplification for someone else. I asked her whose sound she likes and she said "B.B. King", but she is not a tone expert at all (and likes a lot of others too), and when I played the above video for her, where J.B. simulated E.C.'s "woman tone" with the tone rolled off, she said "THAT sounds like BB King". It doesn't really, but what matters is that a Champ can sound the way *she* wants to sound (and I like it too), so I don't have to provide a Twin or whatever!

I look forward to the guitar amp staying out of my share of the audio spectrum too.

Joe Bonamassa seems like a pretty ok guy, and comes across as quite the gearhead. Have you given any thought to reaching out to him directly and asking him about that Champ…

My Skip Simmons modified SF Champ has all that snarl and bite, and way before getting to V=10. Maybe a bit too soon. It has a new Warehouse G8C 20W 8" 4 ohm speaker.
