This might be a noob question, but I'll ask anyway. As the title says, does putty affect the tone of a solid body electric guitar?

Depends where you put it, I'd suspect.

You mean mounting a contact Mic or replacing half the body wood ?

I suspect that it probably won’t affect the tone of a solid body but sometimes other variables may be affected while repairing an instrument that may change tone

I like to put a bit of Silly Putty in each of my guitars. Not to affect the tone, but I can take it out and play with it when I'm bored.

I think if you packed a bunch of it under the bridge or covered the pickup with it the tone would be affected some.

the only way putty will affect the tone is if you pick with it, or you roll it up to make guitar strings with it., or you smear it on the pickups .

I don't know... I have never used putty on a guitar. Pretty much all wood putty is crap and is going to shrink and expand differently than the surrounding wood. Eventually all putty will telegraph through the finish to show where it is if it doesn't crack. Cut out a piece of similar wood to fill the area. Fix it right.

A little "putty" (what ever that is!) Shouldn't do anything. The louder you play, the less whatever the body is made of matters. But at low volumes body type and material matter more.
I've repaired a few guitars with Epoxy resin, including hollow body and acoustics, and I heard no change.

    .

Make a guitar all out of putty and see...

Generally your tone is driven by the pickups and the pots and caps. Most comparisons people forget about pots have a 20% factory tolerance range so it's an important issue rarely protected against. Caps have a 10% range. Pickups have an unknown but suspiciously wide tolerance because there is no reported tolerance spec on any I have ever seen.

Not as much as an ongoing, effective practice routine.

Builders say that materials are major contributors to tone, and while this is true, the real question is "how much?" and that depends on lots of other things. For high-gain playing at reasonable volume, some factors make less and less of a difference relative to the impact they might have for really clean tones at low volume. For ex., you can seek sustain through the guitar's mechanical and acoustic qualities, or seek sustain largely through other components of your rig. In the first case, wood choice -- and the absence of vibration-absorbing putty! -- would be significant; in the second, less so, by far.

if you use silly putty, you can get better harmonics by using silly strings.

I'm just repainting my Melody Maker - following the regime of coatings suggested, it's going to end up with a couple of pounds of paint on it. And that's with just half a dozen coats of nitro. A few ounces of putty - inconsequential.

Where do you intend to put it, and what for? Without this info, difficult to answer although for 90% of all imaginable quantities and places of application the answer would be “no”.

Yes, knowing there is putty can change the tone you hear in your head.

No, it will have no effect on the vibrations in the air outside of your head.
