Gif, like gift, but without the t. You know, the normal way.

    OR

Jiff, like the programmer who created says we should pronounce it. Only, be announced this like 20 years after we all said it the other way.

Gif as in gift because English is stupid enough already.

I don't "jo to the jrocery store", nor do I want to.

I say the first way because the G stands for "graphic" as I understand it.

Eeh-bahn-yez is correct, although Eye- Bonn- yes is acceptable in most circles ...

well, if you go that way, the actual rule is that the letter “g” is pronounced as /j/ when it is followed by letter “e”, “i” or “y”... Gift is afaik an exception to the rule, not being from English origin (from Germanic origin I think).
    In front of a O, it is a hard /g/ .
(Mind you, English is not my first language).

    It's pronounced "fish".

I pronounce it like gift but but without the t. The only times I have heard anyone pronounce it as like "djent" are when people are discussing how it is meant to be pronounced. Like the only time I hear people pronounce the word "kludge" like "klooj" are when telling people "actually you are meant to say it like klooj not kluj".

The guy who invented the GIF standard might have thought he was calling it "jif" but frankly the rest of the world disagrees, and the closest thing to a definition of correctness is how the language is actually used in practice.

Since i was child in the 90's we always pronounced it like jiffy peanut butter. Anyone i've ever heard who pronounces it like "gift", I automatically assume they are technologically illiterate.

In the brave new world of ones and zeros I suspect any spoken word is the wrong pronunciation.

    Fett as in Boba Fett

How about FAQ? In my head I say "fack". I'm afraid one day I'll have to say it out loud to a group of coworkers and they' ll find out I don't say "eff-ay-queue" like them, and I'll be roundly mocked for my differences.

    Oh, and "jif".

    Good point.

    My computer pronounces it 47 49 46 38 37 61 (GIF87a) or 47 49 46 38 39 61 (GIF89a).

I always falter when typing LP preceded by a or an.
An LP works but an Les Paul not so much...

So in a corporate environment it’s not cool to say faqs?
Too easily confused with faxing and swearing?
In the break room with the new fox from accounting?
