When I began venturing into the tube amp world, it seemed that JJ tubes were the most highly recommended. It seemed almost too good to be true, a tube which compares favorably and is even preferred to some of the more expensive tubes out there, but about as cheap as they come. It turns out, for my purposes, that was a correct assessment.

I would rather stick any other tube, even one of the cheap Chinese variety, into the V1 or Power Tube section of my amplifier. When I put a JJ tube in one of my amps, I find myself immediately yanking it out and searching for another, any other, tube to put in its place.

I'm really not great at describing sonic characteristics. But I recently purchased an amp, which I love, but just had a really difficult time EQing the thing, found it a bit cold, and was extremely underwhelmed by the clean and lower gain tones. Low and behold, I realized that there was a JJ tube in V1 (the rest were Ruby).

I used a Jan Phillips 5751, Tung Sol, and Mullard in V1 in its place, and they all completely transformed the amp. It sounded much more open, organic, warmer, and really more balanced, especially with the gain dialed back. Much more appropriate for the "classic" sound that I was going for. In the past, I've noticed that other tube brands gave me the sound that I was looking for, which the JJ could not provide.

I will say that the JJ actually sounded good with the gain dialed up, maybe a bit more focused, tamed some of the unwieldy highs and cleans up some of the other issues you get from cranking the gain. But it was not really why I purchased that particular amp, and I found them quite limiting . I can stick them in any other socket without noticing any adverse effects, but I simply cannot play an amp that has them in V1 or in the power tube sections.

Someone back me up.

My experience is roughly similar. I've tried a bunch of different preamp tubes and some of these were JJs.
The 12ax7 I didn't care for at all. Buzzy, not well defined, no clear top end. Their 12au7 was better. Personally, for me, if I had to buy and use a new/newer 12a[*]7 tube, I'd stick with the Tung-Sol. They sound much, much better to me. I have a couple NoS tubes laying around I sometimes swap in/out, and really old au7s from RCA, GE, Raytheon are the best (but can be microphonic and a bit noisy).

JJ 6V6 work well with high plate voltages.
To me they don't sound great tho.
I prefer NOS tubes at lower volts or TAD 6L6 to the JJs if running high.
Don't think I would bother in the preamp section myself.
So yes I'm with ya. Kind of...

WHAT JJ tubes and WHAT amp?
JJ makes a huge variety of tubes.
My favourite amp , Marshall 1974x,came stock with JJ Tubes and sounds incredible.
I have also used many other tubes from them and never had a problem.

I would say that I like their 6L6GC, but do not like their 12AX7 Premp tubes (ECC83S).

A number of years ago I too had read all the glowing reviews on JJ, many from right here at TDPRI, and decided that I needed to change all to JJ in my HR Deluxe. I did this and the amp went flat. I put the Sovtek or Groove tube (can't remember which came out) and the amp came back to life. I've been using the 6L6GC in my 68 Twin Reverb, and the HR Deluxe ever since, but I've stayed away from their 12AX7 offering.

groove tubes for me mostly, altho I do have a couple of JJs for the power tubes in my Marshall.

I think I used all JJs with my Peavey Classic, but thats long gone so I cant remember.

wait I also have some Rubys in .... something, I cant remember what, maybe my Deluxe.

I dont pick the tubes, I just go with whatever the tech recommends....., altho with the Marshall, me and a friend were goofing with it and decided the JJs were better for it.

I've been OK with them. I had some Mesa branded 6L6s that were pretty terrible, some Rubys that sounded great,
so I don't really know what to think. In all cases they were properly biased. For the most part I think tube swapping
is over-rated and that once you have things biased correctly the biggest factor determining the sound is the overall
circuit design, not the specific tubes. However, I do acknowledge that there are certainly nuances of tone among
tubes that even bias adjustments may not fix. Obviously there is no bias adjusting for pre-amp tubes so that's a whole
'nother issue. In general, when going from preamp Chinese tubes such as EHX brand to JJs I've only experienced either
the same tone or slight tone improvements....so I would not be surprised that an even "better" tube in a preamp
spot might make an additional nuanced tone improvement. But I can definitely live with the results I get from JJs, at least
in really good amps with great circuits.

I have had similar experiences with JJ tubes, but I don't think I'd write them off. I've used their ECC83S in a Champ 600 and in V1 on a PRRI and was not impressed at all. I would certainly read up on whatever JJ tube I was about to use before spending money on it.

Yes. Hate. With a fiery passion. I pull out more of those for noise/microphonics than anything else. I also don't think they sound great because they seem to tweak the specs of the original tubes to stand up to higher voltages, which seems to make them their own thing.

That would explain a lot. I've only tried their 12AX7, EL84 and EL844 but was unimpressed. Out of modern production, I like TAD best - their EL84s are great.

WHICH tubes?
I love the JJ 6V6 and the EL84
I hate the JJ 12AX7, with a set I tried I no longer needed an Overdrive they were so fuzzy!
The JJ 6L6 are ~OK.

Personally I don't believe JJ makes a real 6V6 tube.
yeah, people on the internet repeat that a lot. I tell you what; try a 6L6 in there vs a JJ 6V6 and you will no longer think it sounds much like a 6L6. I did this on my BFDR last year. The amp became spikey clean. Nothing like a DR at all anymore. Smooth and warm and sustain for days with the 6V6's in there. I have them in all my 6V6 amps now. I have vintage Tung Sols, RCA's & Sylvania's in stock. I dont use them. The last set of RCA's NOS I had took out my original output transformer.
The other thing I like is the JJ 6V6's are super consistent. I'm not even sure it's worth checking bias with them anymore.... although I do.

JJ's are absolutely the WORST tubes I've had the misfortune to purchase. I can't understand why anybody would use such loud, rattly, noisy tubes when quality tubes are easily available.

Flat is a perfect description for the JJ 12AX7. Like putting a blanket over the amp. Much less rich sounding. I have encountered no other 12AX7 which has had this effect.

I think people who like JJ 12AX7s should try the Mullards. They are similarly gainy and focused and smoother/better sounding than the JJs. But I love the Tung-Sols.

In my comparison of the JJ/Mullard/Tung Sol/Jan-GE 5751, here's my opinion as to where they should go:

JJs-Trash Can

Mullard- An amp that you would like to add some grind and compression to.

Jan GE-5751- A gainy amp that you would like to clean up and add some warmth to

Tung-Sol- Anything. The best "production" 12ax7 in this price range that I've tried. More open and less flat sounding than the Mullard (which I actually like)

I like em, they were a improvement on the stock AC15 tubes, gave me a bit more clean headroom.

My AC 15c1 chews up JJ EL84’s

I go NOS in V1 in most amps. I’ve found JJ 12ax7 to be meh. Current production agree w others prefer TungSol RI 12ax7

My Dual Terror Head has all JJ’s and sounds glorious. Perhaps like pretty much everything in this music game it depends.

Yep I’m not much help here.....go with your ears!

I use nothing but JJ tubes
I buy them from a good place , they screen and test them , so I pay a little more
Im done with taking the circus train ride of NOS tubes
Ill continue with the JJs and turn some knobs instead
