I'd think more like "Captain". More like a boat than airship...

I also call them "slow bastards" when they're landing at the same airstrip I want to get into

I always thought this was a strange label too. But my English is a Swiss cheese. IMG_20210923_082105.jpg

Had a boss once who had a hot air balloon. Spent all day at work telling me about his flight the evening before. I inadvertently learned all there is to know about hot air ballooning.

My biggest takeaway from all those stories and lectures is that I will never, never, go up in a hot air balloon, which is basically a glorified combination of a big rag, a piece of lawn furniture, and a gas grill. If you wanna preside over that wacky agglomoration and call yourself a pilot, have at it.

I finally had some peace when my boss didn't return to work.

I imagine that a hot air balloonist is more of a passenger than a pilot for most of the trip.
A ride in one of those things is subterranean on my bucket list.

As these things can only be controlled vertically, I agree that the pilot should be called 'Captain'. After all, they're supposed to go down with their ship. :D

I don’t think you could replace a hot air balloon pilot with an auto-igniter. Ignition is only a part of the job.

We took a balloon ride for our 25th anniversary. Glad we did, fun experience, we're working on 41 years now.
As far as piloting you are at the mercy of the wind, really only have control over altitude~

Well, let's just let anybody take up a balloon and see how it ends. Spoiler alert: There will be damage to people and/or property.

In some cases guide to other side might be more appropriate.

You have to have a pilot's license, so... no, not too strange.

You'd be mad to go up in one imo, but I like seeing gazillions of them this time of year. Not uncommon at other times either.
