My boys are 22 and 27 now. They know for a fact I'm one badass MF'er. Or at least at what I do, how I conduct myself and ability to provide. Do they contribute and stand tall at face value? Absolutely! I raised them that way. False pretenses are better left for those I'll shall leave unnamed.

In response to people saying indignantly "I'm no sham!":

I would suggest we all are.

We go through life, most of us, puffed up with an inflated sense of self-importance and significance. We believe ourselves profound, we kid ourselves into believing we are special, and that our purpose and motivations and intentions, and our posts on social media, and our relationships with our children and our significant others and our higher powers are somehow transcendent, because we are somehow so special and deserving of that. We believe our very existence to be something uncommon and special, we feel we breathe rarified air.

It's a survival mechanism, a lot of it. Like Gene Simmons says, “Life is too short to have anything but delusional notions about yourself".

But deep inside, I think we know better. I hope so, anyway.

who knows, maybe it's just me that needs this reminder

    sham
    synonyms: pretense, fake, act, fiction, simulation, imposture, fraud, feint, lie, counterfeit;

    No, I'm not a sham.

My adult kids realizing that they know more than me in some area doesn't then make me any of the above.

I'm hoping this was just a poor choice of words or chosen purely for shock factor.

I would suggest we are all of us inconsistent and imperfect and all of us fall quite short of of deserving of the level of adulation that our children set us up for when they are very young.

    They learn this soon enough.

I clearly remember the moment when this dawned on me, with my mother. It was relatively late. 8th grade. She suggested that a school bully was perhaps afraid of me. This guy was from the big city, and he had straight razor scars on his back, put there by his older stepbrother.

Yeah mom, right. It was at that moment I realized that in this instance she had NO idea what she was talking about.

I wish that I were half the man that my son thought I was when he was eight years old.

If I were half the man my kids thought when they were little I’d be about 125 lbs.

When my son thought I was twice the man I am now, I was only about two thirds as big as I am now.

One of my fondest memories of my younger son when he was young is that of us sitting together in my old easy chair, and watching cowboy movies on TV on Saturday morning. We can't do that anymore. We'd have to sit on the couch!

Funny what we find important from our past as life meanders along.

    Not a sham. Exactly.

But my daughter isn’t asking me to proof her papers anymore.

She completes her doctorate later this year. I am, however, still her dad, and that counts for something. My uses have changed.

    howso?

did he misrepresent himself as a tacky, sketchy pitchman? :)

I'm aware of the legal trouble he got in. It's not as if he was hosting a daytime kiddies' show or something

My mom recently showed my family a picture of her holding me in her arms when I was a week old. I asked if we could recreate that moment and take a picture of it. She said not without me (250 lbs) crushing her (100 lbs) to death.
