Do you have an 1176 pedal?

Specifically this would be a pedal adaptation of the famous lightning-fast Universal Audio FET rack compressor. I believe Origin Effects was one of the first ones, and now UA, Wampler, and several Asian clones makers have relatively inexpensive pedals.

Does such a pedal make sense for guitar? Opto and Ross compressors are most common on pedal boards. What is your opinion?

I have a couple of Origins, an original big-box SlideRig (2x1176) and a Cali76 Compact. The Cali76 lives on my pedalboard powered at 18 volts and I use it a lot, compressing a little & boosting a fair amount. I'm shooting for a clean transparent sound that has some bounce & sustain to it; you don't really notice that it's on until you switch it off.

The SlideRig does the Lowell George slide sound really well & can be made to do other tricks but it's too big for any of my boards.

Overall this is my favorite style of guitar compression & I have used a few of them.

I have the Cali 76 and the UA1176. Also have the Diamond Comp Jr. all on the same board. Several more in the drawer. The most capable ones (Origin and UA) can do what the one-trick pony comps do (Dyna Comp, Ross, Orange Squeezer) but they all have their place for me (in different pedal patches). With the exception of the Ibanez CP-830. That one is unique to itself.

To better address your question (maybe) the UA1176 has selectable options for how Page used two 1176's and also how Lowell used two 1176's. You would need to visit a separate pedal in the Origin camp (SlideRig) to get the Lowell thing. I'm happy to have both and wouldn't dump one for the other.

The Walrus Deep Six is another. I bought one over the holidays but haven't used it much (shoulder surgery). I looking forward to using it both on guitar and vocals.

I have a Diamond comp and a Boss CS-3. The UAFX 1176 is reasonable at $170. If you could have one FET box would you be happy with that one?

yes - that would be a pretty sweet trio, especially if you have an interest in the dual comp modes I wrote about earlier. Also because the CS-3 is already a very capable straight up comp like the Cali 76.

I’ve had the Origin Cali76 Compact, and DryBell Unit67. I enjoyed them both for different reasons. Ultimately settled on the Boss CP-1X.

I know the 1176 is a studio compressor, but in pedal form it’s just another option IME. I’m not sure if being inspired by the 1176 really makes much difference. The Origin, specifically, can be dialed in to sound subtle or squishy.

I would like to give the Dry Bell Unit 67 a whirl, but there's not a large enough space on my pedal board and I'm broke as a joke, so I'm relegated to use my Keeley 2 knob.

FWIW the MXR M76 and M87 are 1176 copies, and they are apparently identical circuits that are labeled differently.

I have one, but I haven't really messed with it yet.

Tempted by the stacked version, almost bought one.
Not as a comp but more OD.
FOMO all the way.
I have a dual tube black finger which is cool but as an alternate in my 100% losses trying to find a comp I have any use for.
Do you have a specific reason the 76 is your holy grail?
Or just curious?

I like using Waves’ CLA-76 plugin (I play through a DAW and I figured a hardware version might be more…idk…organic?) Also, the tricky idea of putting a fast compressor in front a slower optical compressor (like Diamond.) But maybe the USFX is just more digital and I should save for a real analog item. Thanks for asking. What do you guys think?

opto circuit pedals sound better to me in general I have a DOD FX-17 Wah /Vol pedal , with a 5 volt Control voltage output jack on it. No pots and alignment issues to worry about, quiet .

If after looking into it and using a plugin version you are still tempted plus it will not cause financial hardship, I believe buy and try is the best answer.
Buy used and you can get you money back if it adds nothing.
Compression that is “just right” for me comes from tube gain stages but for many it can be had in a comp.
Worth trying.
