I'm looking to get my first pedal and found a used TS-808 on my local marketplace for $80.00 The exterior condition looks good but I'm new to guitar and pedals and not really sure what to look/check for. It would probably be a blind buy if I decide to get it.

Do you guys find the TS 808 bulletproof or would you steer clear from a used pedal?

Also, after watching numerous TubeScreamer comparison videos it seems that the TS mini sounds nearly identical to the 808 and I could buy it new with a warranty for the same price, but I think I would prefer the 808 size.

I buy used almost exclusively. Lower prices and you can sell what you don’t like and not lose any money. It’s a no-brainer.

Would you feel comfortable paying $80 for the above pedal if you were looking for a TS808? Does anything stand out as a red flag just from looking at the pic?

    Thanks

My first pedal was a used Tubescreamer. That was over 20 years ago.

    Do it!

I buy used pedals, no problem. Bought my TS and others used.

FYI, the other guitar player I work with has a mini TS, and he says the volume pot doesn't have a good taper, it goes from 0 to LOUD too quickly.

I don't buy pedals anymore, but I used to buy ( mostly) used pedals on CL, with good results.

My #1 would be my ( 'big box') Barber Direct Drive OD

I do. People turn to digital and unload. Good deals get snapped up quickly, so know what you want, watch, and be ready.

I now only buy used. I found a store that has a huge inventory of used pedals and I trade what I don't want or need for something else.

I have in the past and it hasn't gone well.

Picked up a Boss compressor and it is noisy/hissy if you tweak it to do any actual compression; picked up a Boss digital delay and it'll work for a while and then randomly crap out on me - kills the entire signal chain too. I had a couple of bad public instances as I frantically tore it and the connector cables out of my board. Got'em both years ago, they spend most of their time in a box until I pull them out and try'em again, rinse and repeat. I wouldn't sell them because I'd just be passing the issues on to the next poor guy.

I'm just thinking now that I should give them to my friend who is starting to build his own pedals - maybe he can fix them.

New to Guitar myself but bought a second had East River Drive (Electro-Harmonix) seems to round off the guitar tone nicely

+2 Yup, me too. I have rarely lost money selling used pedals as well.

I haven't, but that is only because the new ones I've purchased were within a few dollars of the used ones I wanted on Reverb...and the sellers have negotiated pretty good prices.

Depending on the model that was probably normal. Stuff based on the dynacomp/Ross circuits are noisy.

I have bought a lot of used pedals. Haven’t really had trouble. The only thing that’s happened to me was I bought a “mint” used Deluxe Memory Man. When I got it the LED was out. But the seller exchanged it for a brand new one at no cost so it worked out.

Pedals are the simplest bit of guitar gear they’re pretty safe to buy used.

I only buy used and online. Haven't been in a guitar store since the 1990s.

Heck yeah! Used is the way to go. Just make sure the pedals are in good shape, and the price is more than fair. I have been picky about the condition and the price. So far I managed to collect a handful of awesome looking pedals for the lowest market price.
Example, I picked up a Boss CE-5 in a pawn shop for $35.00. I just keep checking for Lowest price, and Excellent to Mint condition.
