Do you all have a "number one"?

Discussion in 'Bad Dog Cafe' started by EsquireBoy, Nov 21, 2019.

Do you have a real number one?

  1. I do and I seldom play my other guitars.

  2. One gets played more than the others, but I have no problem sharing the love.

  3. I don't and play all my guitars to suit my mood or my needs.

  4. I own one single guitar, you spoiled brat!

I personally do and always have since I started playing thirty years ago. My number 1 changed multiple times, but I've always had to have a "number 1".
I have so much difficulty sharing my love between several instruments, that it's almost painful to me to own several guitars at the same time.
This led me to almost always sell at least one guitar each time I've bought a new one, even when I did not need to do so to fund the next purchase.
The downside of it is that there are so many nice ones I wish I had kept.

I would be curious to know how many amongst you can relate to that experience, and the reasons behind.

In my case, I guess it's because I've never been able to see any guitar of mine as a tool, and that I've been secretly chasing THE one that would give me life long inspiration and pleasure, even if I know it's kind of a fantasy.

    Cheers!

My situation is very similar. When I get a new one, it stays number one until the next one. And usually when I buy one, I get rid of one, while always holding on to six or seven.

These days, I don't really have any GAS. I have modded a few guitars, and now have a rotation of three that I play almost exclusively.

Ever since buying it new in 1991, my 1989 Squier Strat "the Veteran" has been my most cherished of all guitars I owned over the years.

My PRS Custom is my number one, but it's not necessarily played more often than my Telecaster.

Gibson Nighthawk & SGJ get most of the work

The Nighthawk is very versatile with the pickup positions being very varied. It strums so good -almost acoustic qualities.

    I’m lucky!
I have a number 1 acoustic, bass, and electric guitar.
    I also have a number 1 C&W guitar, and a number 1 R&B guitar.
I’m still looking for my number 1 rock guitar.
    I have one that’s close.
Now I know I can play any bag, on any guitar, but I do think some instruments lend themselves to certain styles.
It’s my favorite excuse (to myself) for having a really nice bunch of instruments.

    Love the bass!

I love my Tele best of my guitars, but I play my top 3 pretty equally, and if (heaven forbid) I could only have one, any of them would be great.

It’s option two for me. I think it’s natural for a favorite to emerge, a go-to guitar, but I really enjoy mixing it up and playing my other guitars as well for their different sounds and feels. Playing other guitars also reminds you why number one is number one. How would you know otherwise?;)

My CV 50's tele is my favorite, some days i'll grab another guitar and play that for a while too. I have a favorite acoustic that I like to play often.

Usage fluctuates I suppose but I always go back to my first electric guitar and will always consider it my number one even though I have other better instruments. You get to a point where you just know it so well and can coax so much more out of it because of the time you’ve spent together.

Nope. What I play is based on what has fresh strings, no tech issues at the time, and my mood.

Any of my five electrics could be my number one. I have three Teles, a Strat, and a Jazzmaster.

Very happy with my collection and just added a Yamaha bass since I’m satisfied with the guitar group.

I have a "two at a time" habit that is not really a conscious thing but I have really noticed it. Basically I rotate through my guitars, generally playing two of them daily, or quite a bit, for a period and then settling on a different two. If something never seems to make it into the top two, then it becomes a candidate for selling on. So at this moment I am playing my PRS Mira and my new-to-me strat and nothing else, I might stop playing the PRS and pick up one of the teles at any moment. I am enjoying the new strat though!

I have one goto electric and one goto acoustic, but I rotate through my 4 electrics, 3 acoustics and a bass almost daily ... with the exception of my strat, but I still try to get it in once a week. That said, I will focus more on one particular guitar for weeks while developing a song or recording, but still play a bit of the others.

I have one favorite Tele, one favorite Strat, one favorite Les Paul and one favorite Gretsch.

Truth be told... I play my Tele most often because I play a lot of older country (50's - 2000). If I played more rock I would likely play my Strat or Les Paul more. If I played more fingerstyle, I'd likely play the Gretsch more. There isn't a favorite between them... they are all great - I just choose the best choice for the job I am doing.
