Do heavier bodies like a Les Paul really sustain better than lighter ones?

MS Code, and a few others. The issue is I use Emacs for development, and I am very comfortable with it. The "Notepad" style editors slow me down too much. VisualStudio, which I use at work, uses Notepad plus overlays - I just move so slowly in that environment.

To be fair, I have not really searched hard for an IDE with Emacs overlays. I write in Emacs and debug there.

Any instrument's sustain has more to do with overall construction more than weight. I have LP's that are close to 10 pounds that don't sustain as well as my 4 pound Thin Line tele.

Not sure how this thread went off the rails so immediately. Is there a joke here I'm missing?

    Anyhoo . . .

Check out "Sustain: Myth and Science." Links to seven other articles can be found at the bottom of the page.

From a physics standpoint, resonance is the enemy of sustain. A resonating body drains energy from the strings, which means they stop vibrating sooner. The pickups' magnetic fields also dampen string vibrations. A Les Paul has twice as many magnets as a Telecaster, and that does have an effect.

Mesa/Boogie makes products with excellent sustain. In fact, they won an Academy Award for it in 1995.

This thread is hillarious and awesome! I was just counting the seconds between notes a minute ago. Epic!

Dare I be on topic, here are some actual experiments, side by side, same hardware, differing woods and/or amount of wood.

My take on the tests is that type of wood, amount, density has an effect on the instrument's tone. But watch the videos and make your own decision. (Whether the differences are enough to matter "once the drums and bass come in" is a matter left for the reader to decide).

Scroll to post 42 and decide for yourself:

If it lasts longer than four hours, you should probably see a doctor.

I tried that when I was in the 7th grade and got suspended for three days.

Evan Rachel Wood is both a fine actor and the source of much of the sustain in the known universe.
