Do guitars being sort of flat make them easier to hide from your spouse?

A guitar out of its case fits perfectly on a hanger--upon which is also a long overcoat. Not that I'd know about this. When I was married, I never kept secrets like this.

I know a guy that brought a really nice Rickenbacker to a jam and I said, "Nice guitar! You never told me you got a Ric. Brand new?"

"No," he replied, "it's a year old. But I couldn't play it until my wife found it under the bed in the guest bedroom."

I learned a little about their relationship that day.

I'm pretty sure you know this, but you're a lucky man, Jakedog.

If the guitars don’t interfere with your other needs, financial priorities and goals why would you have to hide it?

This seems like an instance where mentioning that you got rid of something annoying to her in trade for something not annoying to her would simply make her happy and also avoid future conflict when she inevitably find your hidden fourth guitar.
My rule WAS 8 guitars, after that one in one out, but then my wife bought me a resonator for a birthday present. Now the rule is 9 total, one in one out! I also allow 3 amps - 4 would be nice. There is no rule basis for pedals, mics, and other stuff.

I would get nothing else done if I did that(!). Every time I walk by a guitar I'd have to pick it up and an hour would go by before I knew it. It's bad enough having an acoustic in the living room in a case.

    A very good question!
While it's not nice to point out, I notice a lotta guys whose wives don't like the guitar playing.
Seems strange to me, but maybe it's just where my priorities lie?

If playing guitar is just a hobby and not really a core part of life, it may be fine for the mate to not like it.
But if music is your biggest life pursuit or up there, how in heck can you marry anyone who doesn't like that work you do?

Again, I'm not particularly good at this marriage thing, maybe that's why I didn't even bother going far with any woman who was indifferent to my playing.
I suppose a truly great husband could work around this sort of thing?

Same here, except I keep the finances. We have a joint account and no credit cards, so everything is in the open. Someone wants/needs something, we just tell the other. That said, I have five electrics, three amps and three pedalboards. I keep an amp, guitar and pedalboard at each of the two practice spaces for my two bands.

NOTE: I started this thread as sort of a light-hearted parody of how lots of guys try to justify or hide guitar acquisitions (same with guns, tools, etc.) and the physical property of guitars, being somewhat flat, makes them easy to conceal. However, I see a slight turn - which almost always becomes a sharp turn - into discussions about marital issues. Soooo....this is where I bow out.

    My wife raises quarter horses.

That should be enough info on my position.

Even a three chord genius knows that keeping secrets from your wife is a marital issue???

Seems obvious that one needs to retain a part of themselves; an interest, a passion, an escape. It could be fishing or woodworking. The same for the spouse or significant other. You share the responsibilities, enjoy your time together but get some time apart.

As for the cost, it’s no different than anything else. Do you have the cash and no other priorities or needs? Is it in your agreed upon budget? Will it create debt? Is it coming from discretionary funds?

These are things that I struggled with when I was young, foolish and irresponsible.

    I don’t count her shoes.
    She doesn’t count my guitars.
It’s an agreement we came to awhile back.

Nothing can keep an experienced spouse from sniffing out the secret guitar you smuggled into the basement.

It helps if they are all the same colors as the ones you already have .

My wife supports my desire for any and all guitars, amps and pedals, but ...

my wife, the bass player, has more guitars/basses than I do and her amps are larger too.

And I didn't even mention her keyboard and a few benchs either.

Full of mundane paperwork, right? Didn’t you lose all of the “other” items in that boating accident?
