Yeah I did understand that your "more obvious" was meant as a good thing. Since this project is a learning curve issue and expectations are not too high, I'm going to try a few things and see how they work.

OK. Here it is after a three color sunburst attempt using Keda dyes with five coats of Tru-oil. Came out OK. The "dirty" areas I was originally concerned with showed up more with the dye but they are acceptable.
I added forearm and belly cuts to the Slick as well as reshaped the headstock. Lots of difference between inside and outside pictures.
Probably should have left a more defined edge on the black.

I think you have a winner there...

Here is my philosophy, FWIW, I choose the wood for a certain guitar and stick with it, no matter what. If there are defects, I deal with it, if the color is funny, I deal with it.

Whatever comes, I deal with it and "that" piece becomes "that" planned guitar.

I do not like wasting ;)

Thanks metecem. The wood is really not that bad for the price of admission.
Harold H. Yes it started as a Slick 59 that I bought just to play around with the finish on. I cut the forearm and belly cuts with a rasp, removed all the existing finish on both body and neck, recut the headstock, rolled the neck edges, dyed the body as you see it now and put an amber dye on the back of the neck and a light brown dye on the headstock face. I also cut a bevel on the body in front of the bridge so I can change strings without the bridge. Going to go with a black PUP cover rather than the cream. I'll post a pic when I get it all together.
