I'm a firm believer in giving good reviews for businesses who deserve it, so here's my PSA about DirecTV.

I called up DirecTV yesterday ready to cancel. I don't watch it much and can't afford extravagances right now, so it only made sense to cancel after my contract was up.

The agent asked if there was anything they could do to keep me, and I said the only thing that would do it would be to give me the NFL package for free. I'm a Bears fan living far away from home, my son's mother and I aren't together, daddy time is on Sundays, and he's too young to take out someplace to watch a game while we get a burger.

I thought that would be a non-starter. All he said was "Done. And I see you've been a customer for a while too, so how about I knock $20 off your bill every month?" It required a new 1 year contract to get the NFL package, but I am a super happy camper. DirecTV has always provided me with excellent service.

Interesting you should say that today. Around here DirecTV is the only way to get the Pac-12 Network, because stupid Charter Cable won't come to terms with P-12 to carry it. I might give 'em a call. It's Ducks season.

They tried to charge me 250 buks for shows I never ordered when we cancelled...NFL and porn! took me 2 years to get them to cancel and go away. When I cancelled dish last month I told them I was moving to another country so they had to cancel me w/o all the "do what we can to keep you bs." but glad your happy.....I'm real happy with over he air free tv.

I'm sorry to hear that. (that you're a Bears fan!).

Good news on the service though.

they did a similar thing for me once. I was pleased until I thought about being a sucker for paying the extra 20 a month for so long. How much more could you get removed if they were in a more competitive market?

Daimler Chrysler did a market study on a new vehichle that I was a part of. Enough of us must have said that it was a desireable product but that we wouldn't consider paying the price we were quoted because when it did hit the market it was MSRP'd at just over half what I was shown.

If we all demanded 20 bucks off, I bet the competition would drop 25 when DTV dropped their prices and we would see a new normal in cable pricing. But thats just me.....

I called Directv and told them I was going to cancel because I would not be getting the Sunday Ticket for free anymore. They gave me Sunday Ticket Max for $160 which is half price. Plus, knocked $25 off my monthly bill for the next year without having to extend my contract. So not only do I have my football but am also saving $140. Definitely worth the call.

Most TV providers (and a lot of other service providers) will do that kind of thing if you tell them you want to leave.. You're worth more to them as a customer with a small discount/some freebies than you are if you aren't giving them any money at all.

I have had mixed experiences with DiercTV. They just cancelled their service with CBS, so my wife is not happy. Big Brother is the only "crappy tv" shows I'll watch with her and its on CBS! All I really need is ESPN and SEC Network and I'm happy.

I've been happy with them. They gave me some promo stuff for 2 years.. at the end of 2 years, the guy called and said, "are you happy with your service?" I said, "yep" he said, "would you be happy if we just kept it how it is?" (not raising the price) I said, "yep."

    done.

Good call on the ticket. I had it for a year and it was fun...

DirecTV did not "cancel their service with CBS." Retransmission negotiations between Direct and Raycom failed to produce an agreement, so Direct dropped all the Raycom stations, regardless of network affiliation. The CBS affiliate in your market is a Raycom station. You can bet the impasse won't last long.
