always loved this band. The three dudes have been back together for years now and are still rocking hard.

I like Dinosaur Jr. a lot, but every time I see J. Mascis, I can't help flashing back to Brent Spiner in "Independence Day":

Yeah, he definitely has a look, and he is for sure a very socially awkward guy. Sometimes painful to watch him in interviews, both for him and the interviewer. Awkward silences abound.

You have to engage him in something interesting otherwise he will wisely make you awkward his rig run downs are good and he gets quite animated at times

True, and yeah, his run downs are very fun to watch! I follow him on the Facebook and he posts fun videos of him jamming on various stuff sometimes, especially during this quarantine. Great guitar player. Wish I was half as good.

Went to my first Dinosaur JR gig at age 17, Cambridge junction.
I'm 40 now and since that gig every time they (or Mascis or Sebadoh) play London or Cambridge we have a pilgrimage to see them.
He's a guitarist you have to see live to really appreciate. And the early gigs were insanely loud.

Had a heated 'discussion' in the pub with a couple of mates, what's the best Dinosaur Jr album? In your opinion? I still like 'where you been' probably because it was my first.
I got out voted with Greenmind.

I did see but only once a short ad he was doing about Jazzmasters for Fender where he made a cup of herbal tea and bounced into the living room looking very smiley I think he’s in his drive way at the end playing a pro Jazzmaster. I only watched it once it was quite unnerving really especially when he put the spoon he’d stirred his tea with back in the honey pot and he seemed so happy. I still love him though and Lou and Murph what a bunch of punks...

Their chapter in “Our Band Could Be Your Life” was pretty entertaining. That book covered a lot of the SST bands, worth a read if that’s your thing.

    J. was a huge influence on me as a budding guitar player. Especially in the early 90's when geeking out over gear and playing 10 minute guitar solos couldn't have been any less cool. His playing has a lazy, soaring quality that's very distinctive..and his Crazy Horse/James Gang songwriting style and sense of melody was also pretty unique at the time.

...and dear God, does he play loud.

When I was a roadie for Guided by Voices, Sweet Apple, which featured J. on drums, opened on a few shows. Anyway, after their soundchecks, J. would noodle around on guitar and it was pretty amazing.

Sounds like a fun gig. I dig Guided By Voices also! Must have been fun.

    Couple of things...

    - Lots of people think he's burned out on drugs, he's an intentionally uncooperative jerk, or just painfully introverted. But I'm pretty sure he has some mild Asperger's/Autism going on.
    - The controls on most of his fuzzes/drives are wide open.
    - Holy crap, his action is a mile high!
