I was born in '89 so it's always been sort of a classic to me. When it came out in 1986 were you like "yeah, that's freakin' awesome man!" or "god this is completely cheesy rubbish!"? Just guessing for most guys it was a combination of both :D.

Yeah saw it in the theater when it came out. No cable TV back then and only two channels came in, well one was PBS so really just one.
So we'd go to the theater in town that only showed one movie at a time, screen was huge! Place is still there but it's been cut up so they have like 4 little theatres in the same space there used to be one. It's like watching a big flat screen with a bunch of other people crowded into a living room.
Anyway I saw that movie once because it was showing for like half the summer that year. Haven't had the desire to see it again.

Yep, saw it with my friend and our fathers (both ex Navy men). It was a fun movie, and sort of at the peak of general fascination with nuclear carriers and the aircraft. We'd see all the Bond films, too.

Saw it in the theatre. This was back when they didn’t tell you where you could sit and I always sat front and center. Nowadays they don’t even have a front and center in some theatres because they made another aisle.

Top Gun was ridiculed but enjoyed as cheesy entertainment back then with my crowd.

Now, An Officer And A Gentleman, that was a different story. They’re probably pretty similar, if I were to rewatch them now.

    I sure did.
Brought a gal named Dixie as my date.
    We enjoyed it.
A fella I knew had an older brother who was actually an officer in the Navy and in flight school at the time. We all thought that was the coolest.

I'm 62, watched it at the Drive-In first run and still enjoy it after all the years.

It's a classic that I have on my PVR. While it's cheesy, I've always enjoyed fighter jets and aviation movies.....

When it was released there was nothing else like it.

I did. But I also saw the first three Star Wars movies in the theater, so . . .

I was newly in the USAF at the time so I REALLY liked it!
I saw it with my future wife once and then again with her two sons.
    We all loved it.

I saw it in the theater when I was 23. A year and a half later, I was carrying a duffel bag into the Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola Florida.
Just like Officer and a Gentleman, but a thousand times harder. I dropped out after three weeks, but the experience is etched in my mind.
It was a good thing I did drop. I'm a damn good architect, and I would have made a bad naval officer. Not good with dumb rules and authority figures. And would have made a worse airline pilot after six years.

As you may already know the dog fights in the film aren't realistic. The film depicts cold war era fighter jets dog fighting in close quarters like WWII planes did... F-14's and Mig-29's can shoot are each other from miles away.
