Slight tangent, and maybe unpopular opinion: Another guy with great little fills and riffs like Cropper is Elvis Costello.


Different style, different sound, but yeah… I can totally see that.

I also think Joey Santiago from the Pixies was great at fills and riffs in the late ‘80s/90s. Again different genres even, different sounds, but same penchant for knowing which corner needed a tasteful embellishment, and how not to overuse/overstep that little space.

It’s like a similar type of musical “way of thinking,” just keeps popping up differently in these different player’s hands.

Mustn’t omit Earl King. His influence is arguably limited to Let the Good Times Roll, but the sound of his single note playing on that tune is unmistakable. Which leads to the observation that Jimi‘s influences were largely rhythm players, which could be a thread of its own.
