Did Fender originally shield Tele's or not?

    I have always noticed that the ashtray bridge cover seems to heighten the overall response of the bridge pickup. It also seems to lessen grounding noise. Whatever the case I don't think of shielding becoming a normal practice until the 70's when amps and PA systems became larger. This made all issues with ground noise become far more noticeable.
