This is a 2008 Diaz Texas Ranger made by Peter McMahon. I noticed it has a different capacitor value which I'm assuming it's for the LO cap. Cesar have always used a 0.1uF cap for the LO position. It's a pity Peter is using a 0.047uF (473) cap here. Looks like after Cesar passed away, some Diaz pedals were not very consistent in component values. Not just for the Texas Ranger but also for the Texas Square Face too. I have seen a 33uF cap on a Texas Square Face instead of a 22uF cap. It's a pity Peter was not consistent in component values with some of these pedals. Why didn't he just stick with the component values that Cesar Diaz used???

Really liking the HI position from the Diaz Texas Ranger! The HI position only sounds great when the amp is set correctly

Another Diaz Texas Ranger clone called the "Texas Transit" by Trooper Electronics from Indonesia.

The rotary switch of a Diaz Texas Ranger unit looks like this. 3 position with 2 poles.

Hi,
Thanks for the Pic, but for a "very new" DIY newcomer, is it possible to have a small schematic, or just a simple drawing to explain the wiring of the rotary switch, please?

and another question, would it be easy to convert a terminal stripe layout into a veroboard layout?

thanks guys,

Hi! The schematic for the Diaz is available on Mr. Google. As for the vero layout, any Rangemaster vero layout will work, just make sure to do the mods (there are a few different resistor values, but that shall be it).

For the input capacitor mod, if you want to use a rotary switch, it can be wired like this:
Diagram3a_WEB.jpg

However, the wire coming from the rotary switch (the "center lug") will connect to the circuit input, while the remaining legs of the capacitors (shown going to ground on the picture) will connect to Base of the transistor.

Just built this with a 2n3904 I had on hand and 2 position cap switching. It sounds just lovely with a lowly silicon transistor.

On one is going to believe this, me and Cesar had a conversation about this very pedal, I pointed him to a white paper rg keen had just wrote on this. And a few months later ….

fond memories.

hi all. i ve just finshed to build a texas ranger with a bc547b. just want to know what are the 3 average tensions i should have on the transistor.

If I wanted to add a soft and hard clipping circuit what are the best places to add them? Is it the parts in purple?

@idsnowdog, albeit late response I know — sorry but I don't think your clipping points are going to work. I'm no expert, but I've never seen soft-clipping right off the input and it never goes to ground. If you look at a Muff schematic or a Tube-Screamer schematic, the soft clipping is in the feedback loop of the transistor or op-amp respectively. Hard-clipping to ground exacts a toll as it's basically dumping signal to ground so if you add hard-clipping (I'd suggest between the Volume's lug 2 and output cap), then you'll likely need a recovery stage such as the JFET-recovery of a Rat.

Anyway,
Just wanted to thank @Rama Satria for the schematic (and thread).

For anyone wanting to build this but don't have the rotary switch, a DPDT on-on-on (type 1 or type 2) would work equally as well, be easier to wire up and save a lot of space — could then cram the whole thing in a 1590A.

With the DPDT on-on-on you could have:
Toggle up: small cap
Toggle centred: medium cap
Toggle down: large cap

Or turn the switch around so the large cap is in the toggle-up position, position the switch so the selection is from right to left... whatever.

You could also use a regular DPDT on-off-on with parallel caps, but the order of magnitude would be muddled,
ie smallest-value in the centre-toggle position instead of the middle-value with centred toggle.
(Not my diagram, can't credit its creator as I don't recall from whence it came):

Even if I had the rotary-switch in my parts-stash (which I do), I'd rather go with an ON-ON-ON DPDT!

That's the beauty of DIY, build it how you like to your tastes and needs — be very precise; or build it with whatever you've got on hand, use up some odd components laying around...

The last chapter:

And at the finishline of tinkering with original circuits, swapping values and many hours of soldering prototypes of the Diaz Texas Ranger pedal the ears of the bluesmaster were pleasantly tinkled with pleasing harmonics, glassy cleans and seemingly endless gain on tap and all controllable from the volume control of his white lady stratocaster.
When he played the effect the earth rumbled, clouds broke apart and happiness spread amongst the people of the land.
And no matter what amplifier he plugged into, tube, solid state, vintage, modern, low wattage, high wattage stacks
his sound was always spot on and his guitar could be heared no matter how many other instruments were played at the same time he was playing.
The brother of Shiva was awakened once again and felt a tremor inside the depths of his body where his soul and spirit housed... the more he played the more he started to feel awake and gladly took in waves of cosmic energy and peace until finally the WARRIOR MONKEY in him was truely and fully awakened!
And so dear readers and connaiseurs of tone a wise decision was made to give the circuit he made and played so vigorously an identity!
Behold!!! Pemburu Monyet - Rama Satria signature treblebooster 'purple edition' skillfully put together by Trooper Electronic.
Based off off the original Cesar Diaz Texas Ranger nad tweaked, upgraded and modded to perfection to sound good on all amplifiers and with all guitars no matter who playing it.
and thus concludes our lore of the birth of the Pemburu Monyet Purple treblebooster.

Since 2021 i have been using this pedal sn#0028 artist proof (no ledlight, no 9v input) every day and every time i play my guitar... it makes my heart beat faster, excite my senses and adds that extra silver lining of special aura when i pick up the guitar.
It cleans up sparkly clean at 7 of the guitars volume dial and roars like EVH's vintage Jose Modded Marshall stacks with the Variacs in line and the bias all hot n spicy when the guitar volume is on ten!!
And inbetween there's a myriad of scrumptiousnes in tones and harmonics to be had!

With all my heart i confess: i am nothing without this pedal.
i simply don't enjoy the feeling of playing.

True story Yo!

Olaf
