That’s more joyless ********.

Eat food you like, then hit the gym. Hit it really god damn hard if you have to.
I don’t know if you have experience with diabetes, the topic of this post. While hitting the gym may help, no, you cannot simply eat what you feel like and expect exercise to get you through the rest.

Types of food and portion control, particularly with the type and amount of carbs is critical.

That’s why even world class athletes with type 2 diabetes can’t just eat what they want.

I've known smokers with lung cancer, and a guy who received a liver transplant and continued drinking afterward. COVID killed him.

People are idiots. And that includes us all to some degree.

As I have gotten older I have become more aware about how the food you eat reacts with your body. When I was young there were not many obese people in the US, now they are everywhere. And yes it seems to have started around the time in the 1980's when high fructose corn syrup began to be widely used. Years ago I also remember talking to a former pastor at my church that was the first one to tell me that as you get older you have to eat less and less. He was about 95 at the time and said he ate like a bird and most of the people that he knew that were his age did the same. I also have found that I can cook a healthy dinner in less time than it takes to get take out or doordash and then I know my food is fresh without additives.

It actually began a decade earlier, when the medical profession started demonizing fats. Fats are the last thing to leave your digestive system, which is why they make you feel satisfied. Food producers didn't want to be seen as producing unhealthy products and yanked out the fats. Low-fat foods don't taste particularly-good, so the fats were replaced with sugars that, ultimately, included HFCS. The packaged stuff we've been eating since isn't satisfying, so we eat more of it. Welcome to Fat City.

These people could be Type-1 so this would maybe be a bit judgemental? All those people were going to be diabetic regardless of what they ate.

Not really about diabetics but the whole holier-than-thou low carb thing is so played out and ridiculous. As you sit up in the ivory tower and brag about how low carb you are remember there are huge swaths of the world that eat high carb diets that have little of the American obesity and health problems. Athletic fit people tend to eat a lot more carbs than sedentary dieting types as well. It's only one variable in lifestyle.
Every where I have been where the people tend to eat high carb diets and maintain a reasonable weight have three things in common:
1. The food is all fresh food grown nearby. No Twinkies and highly processed or over regulated crap.
2. They eat very little in the way of fast food.
3. They tend to be more active either through work or play.
