Well, found a dead possum in backyard. I think our new Hawk
neighbors did their thing to this critter.

Well, I picked it up with a shovel, and put it in industrial ply garbage bag
and duct taped it so no air could get out. Put in garbage bin.

My wife and neighbors wife are looking at me saying that is not going to work.

Well, they were right. Next day, a billion flies and the smell that goes on forever.

So , I got big, I TOLD YOU SO.

What did I do wrong. In theory, it should have been okay? Industrial bag.

Went and buried the darn thing, plastic bag and all.

No woods around? I have a small wooded area right at my back fence and I just toss the various things I find there. Nature does it's thing and it's all good. If you are going to bury it at least do so without the bag, let the worms have at it.

My property backs up to a big wash, dead critters go in there and the coyotes take care of them for me. I do agree with JustStartingOut: if you are burying them, the bag will only inhibit the natural disposal processes.

Sounds like you didn’t use enough tape.

In my city, we call Animal Care and Control, and they come out (quickly) and take it away. Don't know if they bury or incinerate. (might depend on the critter's religious affiliation. ;))

Bury it without the bag and let nature do its thing or do you have a neighbor you dislike?

If you have an extra freezer in the garage or similar, double bag it and throw it in there until trash day rolls around. That's what I do since the ground is too hard to dig here and I don't feel like smelling it in our can in the interim.

My first thought with the whale would be to simply tow it WAY out in the ocean, and let nature take its course. I realize I may be missing something, but even before I saw the video I thought blowing it up with dynamite to be a BIG mistake.....and for once I was absolutely right.

A couple of years ago our dog caught up to a fleeing squirrel. I wasn't sure what to do with it so I picked it up with a shovel, dumped it into a trash can, put it at the curb and called Animal Control for my town and told them I had a dead squirrel on my property and wanted it taken away.

The woman asked where the squirrel was, and I told them it was in a garbage can at the end of my driveway. She said they weren't allowed to go into someone's garbage can to remove an animal and that I should dump it in the street and call her back. I did, and they came out about 10 minutes later and took the squirrel.

That info came in handy when my dog got hold of a possum last year. Out in the street it went.
