    i love Diamond Dave. he's a wack-a-doo. but IMO, there is no Van Halen without him.

    Dave’s time frame is a little off, unless this was an older interview. Pretty sure that song is over 30 years old at this point.

    I always thought the backup vocals in early Van Halen songs were an interesting contrast to the ??? that Dave was doing up front. That contrast was part of Van Halen's charm.

    Dave was a buttplug, never a great singer, but a great frontman and vocalist. Van Halen needed a buttplug frontman.

    Yeah, part of what made VH so great was that they were a proficient band with an absolute clown/buttplug as a frontman. When Sammy Hagar joined, he was a better singer but was too organized and had it together - things that in most cases are positive attributes. But in rock and roll, all bets are off.
