I've seen the same Threads on other forums. I know his web site has gone back and forth over the last year from active to inactive.

    Hope he's OK.

I hope he's ok as well. There's a big thread on strat talk about this and some are actually trashing him and calling him a fraud.

Last email I got from him was over a year ago. I've been wondering about him lately and actually did a search and found this thread and a bunch of others. No idea what's up - health issues is my fear.

David Allen has no relationship to Allen Amplification, and his pickups I've purchased (mainly Strat and Tele models) are hand made, certainly not made in China.

I met him in person a few years ago when I bought one of his guitars with his pickups in it, and was impressed at how a laid-off ex-NASA engineer decided to turn his hobby winding pickups into a business. Since then, I've put his pickups in almost all my guitars. I hope he's OK.

The key is, why they are the best you have tried. It's a sweet deal for the manufacturers that you can never get under the hood and know why. That's why some of us do electrical response testing. But in the case of the expensive ones, someone has to "take one for the team" and make the outlay (usually to be discover only a reasonably well made product that is almost identical to others). I have tested a lot of Chinese ones, and posted results here. You can compare specs with any of the USA/European makes that Antigua has tested in his online database. But it doesn't include any boutique stuff because, as I said, someone has to pay for it.

Ironically, the better Chinese pickup brands do consistently list important specifications like inductance (in addition to the more nebulous DCR). From that you can at least differentiate between them. You can also pretty much depend on certain brands now, like Donlis and Fleor. Some of the online vendors sell these without mentioning the brand. It's really important to know which tier you're buying because a lot of the stuff coming from there really is junk.

I decided to start challenging people with a proposition when things like this come up - if you really want to know why they are so good, lend them to me for testing. Then you can see where they fit in the bigger universe of products. You could save a bundle on your next set.
