Volume swells require a pot with a real even taper from loud to soft. Wah-swells work better with a pot that has a fast taper, so it can go wah-ooo without a lot of knob travel. It's easier to find the fast taper pots that the smooth taper pots. Terms like "linear taper" and "audio taper" work great in theory, but often the descriptions aren't quite what your ear wants to hear. Trial and error.

Wah-swells work best on the bridge pickup with a little bit of grit. Too much overdrive sometimes masks it. Wah pedals often have a wider range than your basic passive tone pot, which is why they work in heavier drive situations.

Danny's personal or the Custom Shop model? 500k volume and 1-meg tone pot

Gatton Gear
Reprinted from July 1993 Guitar Player magazine.

"Danny's main guitar is a Danny Gatton Telecaster prototype built by Mike Stevens at Fender's Custom Shop. The guitar, serial number DG00001, features early-model Joe Barden pickups, a stainless steel bridge plate, heavily knurled stainless steel knobs, and a 1 meg tone pot with a .05 capacitor to create wah effects."

DUDE,295, you rule. Thats exactly what I needed to know. Going to buy the pots today and give them to my Tech and away I go (decide just to let a pro do it -i hate screwing up things then having to take my axe in with my head held low, lol).

Carmine, are you using Bardens pickups? Other pickups might not respond the same way to those cap/ pot values.

Danny would set his vibrolux reverb to vol 4.5-6.5 (higher preferred, but venue deferred), tr 5.5, bs 4.5, rv 3. Use Similar settings on most blackface amps (mids preset at 7)
