This is exciting.
I cannot be the only person who thinks he's HIGHLY overrated.
In Oingo Boingo, it was Steve Bartek who handled most of the profound guitar duties. Danny was more rhythm and singing duties.
To put it mildly.
One of the most talented musicians I have seen. I stood in front of him and Oingo Boingo a dozen times. Great entertainer and good guitar player. But it wasn't about the guitar. He is a lyricist, player, singer, composer, producer of fun and imaginary music. Hats off to a guy I have the utmost respect for. As he says about his new project "I am not a guitar player." Can't wait to listen to him.
I haven't listened to the entire album through, but the half dozen or so songs I've heard so far have been pretty bad. It sort of sounds like Elfman was listening to a bunch of metal industrial bands and Scott Walker, threw some cheesy orchestration on top, and added lyrics that were written by an angry college freshman after taking their first hit of acid.
To be fair, I've never really been able to get on Elfman's wavelength from Oingo Boingo through most of his soundtrack work.
The Simpsons theme is not overrated.
He's a fantastic producer, that's really his strength. First couple Oingo Boingo albums were great.
I like the Batman theme.
I never ever thought he looked like an elf
I am not one
Almost 200 soundtrack credits on IMDB going back to 1980 (Forbidden Zone where he also was the Devil.)
Oh yeah and he fronted bands too.
Completely understand not liking him, just disagree.
Don't even get me started on Mark Mothersbaugh
At least Mark is somewhat interesting. The majority of Elfman's work is basically him ripping himself off.
i like him. The simpsons, beatlejuice (come on this one is awesome) and batman i think ?
Compared to the work of Alf Clausen (the times he actually did it), it most definitely is.
Can’t argue with what the guy has accomplished, as in, every other freaking big budget film score!
He sold out and became a generic product just like most Hollywood composers, basically creating the exact same score for every movie and getting millions of $$$'s. The 1989 Batman score is brilliant and his best work IMO.
I don't know about Danny Elfman being overrated...
But Oingo Boingo as a band are most assuredly underrated.
Their music is mostly brass/keyboard driven, but there's a lot of tight and complex stuff happening here, including Bartek going after it on a goldtop Deluxe.
This is from 1980 (!). Few bands were doing what they were doing at the time.
I don't think so at all. I love what he did with pretty much all of the Tim Burton stuff. I regard him as a pretty talented guy.
Only a Lad.
My kids love The Nightmare Before Cristmas. I think I have heard the soundtrack 100 times.
