Christian Eriksen was and is, one of the most celebrated and best remunerated players, in Europe. He probably earns as much in a couple of months, as Damar Hamlin does, in a year, to play a much less explosive sport.

The average draftee plays for perhaps four years, in the NFL. You would hope that Damar's agent is looking for alternative ways to turn his international celebrity, into a longer term career.
You are correct. On a prior thread there was a suggestion that Damar was a gazillionaire. Far from it, particularly given that the average NFL career is 3-4 yrs.

If he indeed plans on it. He and the Bills might want to get several opinions on that move.

Probably just youth talking.

Glad he's still alive. He should consider himself very lucky to have dodged that bullet.

I hope the NFL doesn't let him come back only for the publicity aspect. His long term health should be the main concern on all levels.

Wasnt this presumably caused by the blow to his chest at the perfect moment of his heartbeat cycle and not some illness/disposition? If it was the former it could happen to anyone. The latter would give me pause.

Cardiac arrest in cyclists seems to be more prevalent now too. They are happening every season lately. The last rider that made headlines with this issue was during a sprint, and went into cardiac arrest immediately after. He was saved fortunately and retired from the sport. Others weren't so lucky.

My NFL friend burned through 11 million. Our relationship was guitar oriented. He had hangers on including relatives. He couldn't say no. I asked him to say no. He never did. I had to leave the scene cause it was heartbreaking. I mentored him but I arrived way too late. All of these guys need a mentor to keep them straight. To help them to say no. Few have them. The ones that do, you probably know who they are. My household? If I went to the store to buy a !5 cent bottle of Pepsi, My Mom would say, "you think money grows on trees"? I was guilted into suppression often

Eriksen's market value is a quarter what it was in 2019. He's not even in United's top 10 for pay.

For those who don't know, Erickeeen also had a cardiac arest during a game.

He makes £17.5 million salary- plus whatever endorsements he has. Damar is in the second year, of a four year, $3.480.000 rookie deal. £150.000 per week, as opposed to $825.000 for the year.
Some of the guys in Manchester, who are paid more than Ericksen, have done very little, in the game. His lesser contract reflects his age- but he could walk into most good teams, still.

I wouldn't expect anything else really.

This was a million to one shot and not an on-going health issue. As long as there are no repeat signs of trouble, he should have the same million to one risk like everyone else on the field.

There was a hockey player back in '98 who was struck in the heart with a puck who suffered a similar injury...he came back to compete in the play offs.

Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins has had multiple strokes. He just had one a few weeks ago, and he is back on the ice. The guy is a veteran NHL'er and doesn't need the money. I can't imagine taking that kind of risk for no real need. Damar is probably one of the many athletes that has bet it all on becoming a successful professional athlete. He may be thinking it is his only shot at success, because there are thousands of guys who didn't make the cut and have no backup plan at all. Hopefully he has the family support group to help him think wisely about coming back to football as a player.

That opportunity doesn’t exist in the US since soccer is a minor professional sport. The money is in football, basketball and baseball here. Hamlin plays a game he loves and excels at for a salary of roughly $900k per year. It is what it is.

I would imagine that his agent will have no shortage of endorsement offers but the only thing that’s important is restoring his health. As you stated, an NFL career is short so Damar was never guaranteed anything beyond his rookie contract.

Good for Damar! I hope he makes sure he is cleared and that he has good folks who give him good advice. My son tore his knee up in middle school, in the process of getting ready for surgery, we learned he had a heart defect that was potentially life threatening. It was a harrowing time, I was able to have a conversation/consultation with one of the best, most thoughtful pediatric cardiac experts. When I asked if he needed to avoid sports etc... she told me the actual odds of what COULD happen. Then she said was being safe worth the risk of it would forever change the arc of his life?

We did several rounds of rehab and while he missed most of the baseball season, he was ready for the first day of football practice.

I had a mom get in my face and tell me that it would be 'my fault' if something happened to him.

He just had his 26th birthday and he has a clean bill of health.

I hope Damar has a long and successful career and gets to leave the game when he chooses.

Hoping for Damar to get back to full health soon!

I wouldn't begrudge him being a part-time or even full-time philanthropist administering the $4,000,000 in the GoFundMe for his toy drive...long as he didn't buy a mansion in Monaco for himself...long as he kept bringing toys to the homes in the Buffalo area old St. Nick might have skipped...as long as it was an efficient charity.
