I got one at a garage sale this summer for $10. I like it a lot, cleans up real well when rolling off the volume on the guitar.
I like Danelectro pedals in general but I wouldn't pay more than $30 for any of them.

$50 seems high. They can be found around here for $20 - $30. Nice pedal, but I think of it more as a distortion than overdrive (pretty close to a Marshall Guv'nor at some settings). I bought mine new in '99 and its been in regular use ever since with no problems. Works well on bass too.

In fact it is very faithful to the Guv'nor circuit. I have one a paid $40 for it. It is a great dirt pedal and for the price you should still get it I think. It ain't on my board ATM but it comes out to play often. Great for giving some Marshall drive to another amp. With 5 knobs it does take a little longer to dial in but it's a rewarding process.

Top dollar for sure. While many dig the Daddy O, you can find em much, much lower priced. The last two I saw were $25 and $35.

I'll probably pass on this...sounds like $50's too much ( although being on CL I'm sure I could talk him down..) but even still don't think its for me because sounds like more of a Marshall distortion than an overdrive...I've got a sparkle drive for $50 (now that's a good deal!) and I thought maybe the daddy o was kind of like that but guess not...

its good for trashy fizzy sounding distorted drive sounds, as well as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden type stuff. I have also used it as a cleanish mid -treble boost rolling off the guitar volume. it works great with other pedals for experimentation and recording. LIke a Fuzz Face with a Daddy-O. that's a good combo

No iron maiden or Judas Priest going through my amp...not that it's bad I just don't know any! I play like Jerry Garcia type riffs...blues,jazz,country ,and bluegrass I guess you'd say...and need a more organic natural sounding tube overdrive...maybe not a good fit for me...is there another dano type pedal that's more in my vein?

Transparent Overdrive, especially the Version 1. CTO-1 is the model number, CTO-2 is Version 2 (which I think is still supposed to be good).

Great for those bluesy Jerry riffs (Truckin', etc.) if I do say so myself. For "clean Jerry" sounds (e.g. ballads) I like a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster (<$50 used).

The Daddy-O sounds like it might be good for really distorted Jerry tones, if it's got that Maiden/Priest thing going on, e.g. "Hell in a Bucket" or the end of "Deal". You might try it in that context and see if you like it (if you play any of that stuff). I use a Rat for similar sounds, Jerry used a Boss HM-2 in the 80s.

He used a heavy metal distortion pedal?!? Doesn't seem very jerry-esque? What did he use before that? I know most of his gain sound came from the amp it self, I believe he used a deluxe reverb...

The Duncan is a clean boost. It's by Seymour Duncan, the pickup companies. There are a ton of different clean boosts, nothing really special about that one except you can sometimes find it cheap. You can also just turn your volume up on your guitar but I don't like tweaking my volume onstage so much.

For the Boss HM pedal, that's the truth. That's the heavy, saturated tone he started using on a few songs in the 80s. I don't know how similar that is to the pedal you have, but it seems like a pretty classic 80s hard rock/heavy metal sound.

Before that I believe he was using an MXR Distortion+ as a distortion pedal (late 70s). Of course, before the mid-70s he was just playing into his amp with a wah-wah pedal. Fender Twin pre-amp into a Macintosh power amp. In the latter days, he had a Groove Tubes rack-mount preamp. There's a lot of info about Garcia's rig out on the net if you have time to sift through it (and lots of other players, of course). I play in a Garcia tribute band but I don't worry about buying the exact same gear that he had, I try to think more in terms of the different sounds he liked to use on different songs and how I can get in the ballpark (e.g. Cool Cat Vibe for songs he played through a Leslie speaker, etc.).
