This time I took off around a 1/4 inch of thumb meat. I sliced it so hard and so fast that I took off some of the nail, too. There was some white stuff visible - not sure what. Bone?

    Chopping herbs.

I don't mind the pain and I can live with the awkwardness and not being able to ties my shoes or type on my phone.

But it will severely limit my guitar playing for several weeks. Left hand, end of the thumb, which I use for bracing against the neck when fretting, or for the low E string when playing chords up the neck.

I seem to do this to myself three or four times a year. Always chopping vegetables. Sometimes after a cocktail. I wise up and get careful for a few months, then I get sloppy and whomp, off it comes.

Depressing and frustrating. Thanks for allowing me to moan.

One of these days you're gonna run out of the end of your thumb. Be careful, brother.

Did it cut like a knife but feel so right like it did for Bryan Adams?

    It did not.

Also, this most recent incident was the worst by far, thus proving Cat Stevens wrong about the first cut being the deepest.

sorry to hear. Hope it heals as good as possible.

But seriously: thumbs are issued in limited supply. there are youtubes for everything; including techniques for chopping up food that leave your digits intact. It's possible.

I was going to suggest one of these too. They aren't that expensive on Amazon either.

just watch it's amazing the meat/muscle will puff out and new skin will grow over it.
I used to be a prep-cook cutting up veggies meat cheese potatoes 8 hours a day the finger tips on my right hand ( I'm left handed with a knife or clever.) have slightly flat places ,
I only cut myself when talking to some one.
I always keep my knives razor sharp when I cut myself , at first it didn't hurt , it felt cold. I think that I doesn't hurt because the tissue doesn't suffer damage from blunt force , like when you hit a finger with a hammer, It may not bleed ,, no lacerations, everything still looks in tact but it hurts like blood hell!

july 13 , 2007 I had a jigsaw accident and it ripped the first joint off my left thumb. No more jimi for me... but turns out I developped my own technique due to that. I am not sorry about it... just different

During my career, I worked with a lot of machinists. What I learned was that the machinists that were missing one finger were excellent machinists. The ones missing more than one finger didn't seem to learn from their mistakes.
