I am currently working on a custom design guitar that I drew out on some 3/4 mdf. Is it better to have a neck template with the headstock attached or separate. I made them as two separate pieces just wondering if there is a better way or either way works when routing the templates. This will be my first neck build.

Do you have an oscillating sander and have you read any build threads where people rout their pegheads?

My opinion is to avoid pattern routing the curves of the peghead to avoid tearout. That means sand the peghead shape not pattern rout it unless you have the 100 dollar spiral bit. The straight sections of a neck pattern rout pretty well with the exception of the end of the neck, which may tear out at the corners. Trim the wood as close to the template as you can get it. You should be pattern routing about 1/32 to 1/16" off. More than that leads to trouble. Buy a new bit too. As always. YMMV.

My headstock templates are separate from my neck templates.
I use the template to trace the shape of the headstock.
I then trim the headstock with a band saw then sand to the line.

Marty is right on not routing around the tip and treble side curve on the headstock.

    Look like a good start!
