interestingly, THE NEW battlefield game that came out this week has a swear filter on the text conversations online, but in the single player offline game, the characters swear like crazy. Very strange.

Cowards omit adequate words from text or speech if those words truly belong. How often they truly belong is relative to one's company.

To my ears a racial ,religious, social class or national slur is far more offensive than cussing.

Which is why I plug in the headset but turn the volume down.
I don't need to hear that when I am busy killing them.

That darn power elite . It's always trying to punish me for doing whatever I feel like doing. It's unfair.

It's actually bizarre that anyone would deliberately offend the people around them and then blame some mysterious "power elite" for deciding to marginalize them. Life is hard when simple stuff is made this complicated. It's just a matter of good manners and bad manners. Good manners don't hold people back, bad manners do. Live it, or live with it.

I know all about the whole lack of respect, lack of vocaculary things...but sometimes there simply is no better response to something than a good expletive. That said, if someone is lobbing them at you, a loud and sincere sounding "Jesus loves you!" will REALLY piss them off.

I've encountered very little vulgar language in public, but holy cow, tv is something else nowadays, eg, Jon Stewart.

Agreed 100%, though I try to watch all my language in public. The last time I REALLY cursed in public (bout 20 years ago) also had law enforcement intervention, handcuffs, probation, and being banned forever from Bellsouth property.

I completely agree with this. I don't curse, either, but racial slurs really get my hackles up. It doesn't help that I'm a white Christian. The really sad thing is that many folks who spout racism don't realize how racist they are.

I have been told that I cannot understand racism because I'm white. I'm dumbfounded by that, but it's something lots of people believe.

I had a black man tell me he could not be a racist because he was black.
    Go figure.

    when I was a kid,

I used to think cussing (aka: cursing) was all "grown up", along with smoking and drinking.

Now I think people who do it are just ignorant. It doesn't matter to me where one is, when they start cussin'...there are so many more (imaginative, even funnier) words to use besides using profanities. To me, profane words are almost too boring to even use anymore.
