I tripped over the Temptations' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" in a music stream and I love the sound that Wah Wah Watson gets - had to do a little digging to actually figure out who it was.

If I wanted to get that kinda wah sound, what would be a current production wah to buy?

    many versions available
some are tweaked to sound better with distortion or offer options to adjust Q, sweep range, and boost level
stock version works for Wah Wah Watson sound, but will be more authentic with a HB-equipped hollowbody

    Did Watson use a Crybaby?

A wah with a bit more sweep than the current basic crybaby imo.
The Fulltone Clyde nails the WW Watson vibe .

To reproduce the Wah Wah Watson trademark sounds, a phase shifter and echoplex will be helpful as well

Don't know much about him, why I like this place - always discovering. I saw Dennis Coffee 2 years ago, cool to hear his name (in the other video)!

For sure, TDPRI is a great source for new music for me.
If you like Dennis Coffee (listening to Scorpio now, thanks!) you might like Hancock's Man-Child (Wah Wah Watson throughout) and Thrust.
Headhunters has no guitar tracks, I love plugging in and writing parts over it.
Here's another Watson track from Man-Child:

Any classic style wah will do that.
Personally never liked the crybaby. Too thin and nasal sounding, and it messed up the nyp signal. A Vox is probably a much better choice. Or the Fulltone Clyde that someone mentioned, but that is pretty pricy.

I have a 2000s era Vox 848 Clyde McCoy wah on the way. Not sure its the best, but the price was right and in mint condition, 20 years later...
