You better get them side cutters out and give them babies a trim before you poke your eye out. Worse, one could penetrate your nose, then do that fishhook thing and there you'd be with a guitar stuck to your nose.

Yah, if I have non-vintage tuners, I'm cutting it all off...and bending the sharp bit back into the hole. I'm a hazard...cuts slashes and pokes are daily fare for me...unless I remember to take precautions.

I clip mine right next to the tuner. No eyesore, no sharp ends.

Keep one of them long, I suggest the B string.
It's a handy cigarette holder for a few drags between songs.
I used to see it done quite often in folk clubs.

Back in the bad old days of two-prong cords on guitar amps, I'd leave mine long and loose, somewhat like feelers. NOBODY dared to invade my stage space...

I also found it useful to encourage surly drummers who dragged the beat.

easy to do, faster than digging up the dern wire cutter, eliminates the danger of someone finding a six-inch piece of wire on the carpet, and looks cool as hell. Been doing it on folk guitars for over fifty years.

Can't on Teles and Strats because of the little slotty holes.

I left mine long once because I didn't have cutters handy. I think I saw someone left them long (Manzanera of Roxy Music, maybe? ) so I wasn't too worried about snipping.
Sometimes when you move around a bit, a couple of long strings will whip against the strings. Sometimes you'll catch one on the back of your hand. Doesn't hurt a lot, just enough that you don't want it to happen again.
