Hi I upgraded my pots in a Squire tele 2011 I used quality cts 250k vol and tone with a 047uf orange drop cap but the guitar seems a little bit dark but seems to have a bit more clarity with standard pickups should I change the pots to 500k or upgrade the pickups cheers

spend $5 on a pot or $50+ on a pickup? seems like an easy choice. I'm sure the pot values were chosen with the pickups in mind... so find out what the pot value should be and match it.

for what it's worth, i think CTS pots are a little overrated. those $0.50 alpha pots have smoother turns and hold up better

I don't agree. The CTS are vastly superior. Especially in the tone department. The others are darker sounding to me.

Does it sound different than the original stock pots & cap? Did you use the same value cap? The +/- variance in pot values can factor in too. Did you test them?

Do people really hear a difference between brands or cap types? They all perform a same function. A signal doesn't know what type of capacitor or potentiometer brand it's going through. Unless it's particularly dirty, tests faulty or crumbling apart I can't hear a difference. When you buy CTS, Bourns, etc. you're buying better quality for long term use, not better "tonez" imo. I get a kick out of the PIO caps/pots hyperbole.

I like Alphas for the price & turn resistance. If I get a good price on some better quality pots I usually buy then in bulk. It just makes economic sense.

Ahh I just assumed 250k for a telecaster but just checked pots replaced 500k so there is the issue, I may keep the 250k s as I was thinking of upgrading the pickups I know the upgraded pickups will need 250s . Thanks for your input .

Your op & follow up post is hard to follow. Punctuation is your friend.

Did you change the pickups too? If so, to what?

No they are standard Squire Affinity pickups , but I am thinking of doing an upgrade.
    I am very dyslectic.

    .

Adjust pickup heights (if ceramic magnets then adjust down)
Measure and swap volume pots (higher kohm for brighter, lower for darker), measure actuals as pots have a 20% range.
Only then look at new pickups if nothing else fixes the problem

Also try a 0.022 cap. Not as dark when tone rolled off.

Go capacitor to .022uf or .033uf before you start changing other parts.

Is it "dark" when the both the volume and tone controls are up all the way max with amp
treble up fairly high as well?

just disconnect the ground lug on the vol control that is bent back to the casing of the pot - that will open the whole thing up and effectively remove the controls - if still too dark adjust pickups or change in extremis. butthat gives you the potential palette
