Recently the Blackguards were discussed some times. I just had build that set in my 2010 American Standard, red translucent, maple neck. Now I wanted to compare theses pickups with those in my 2014 American Standard (maple neck too, but made of alder) with the Twisted Tele / Broadcaster pickups; if you are interested, read further.

So I noodled along a backing track, consisting only of drums and bass, with both guitars and otherwise identical settings of all the gear. Both guitars had new strings (Fender, 09). I used neck and bridge positions, first clean, then dirty.

The guitar on the left (resp. the one that starts) is the 2010 Blackguard, on the right the 2014 TT / Broadcaster).

Warning: my playing on this is real crap, just compare the guitar sounds!

Signal Path: Guitar => ME 80 (no effect on) => Mesa Express, clean / blues mode => Cab Clone, open back setting => GAP Preamp => GAP compressor => Steinberg interface => Cubase. No eq in Cubase, just reverb. No changing of settings in between.

Nice work up udoering and there's not a damn thing wrong with your playing. Nice licks.

To my ears the Blackguard pickups have a "sweeter" tonality to them. I'm wondering if they aren't same CS Nocasters I have in two of my Teles.

    Blackguard vs Nocaster

Soulman696, I think I can answer your question. I took out another Tele that is waiting to be sold; it´s an 2010 American Standard with a Nocaster set. There are some differences: it is made of ash, has a rosewood fretboard and 10 gauge strings. Also, I couldn´t activate the cab as it was very early in the morning, which increased the power coming out of the Cab Clone so I had to adjust the settings on the preamp.

So I took the first recording, muted the TT / Braodcaster parts and played the Nocasters instead. I think, in spite of those differences, one can hear they are not the same. The Nocaster neck pu is much more glassy then the Blackguard, while the Nocaster bridge pu has definitely more balls and seems to compress more.

I agree with you, the Blackguards sound really sweet. I´m glad I had them built in.

Definitely a difference. Your Nocasters seem much brighter than mine although the strings probably make a difference. I have set of pure nickels on the one I usually play and that may be part of it plus amps and our own ears as well. LOL

Great sounding pickups that TT/Broadcaster set. :D
