I can't find "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding" that he did in this session. Friggin youtube has buried it for some reason. Damn shame too.
Great pop music!
Nick’s the best!
He wrote some great songs. This one’s hilarious....
I've been a fan of Nick since the 70's when he and Dave Edmonds were in Rockpile.
Not the same session, but...
Tho' this is my favourite version...
Another Nick Lowe appreciation thread? Yeah, I'm down with that!
Love this later period Lowe track -- added bonus is Lowe going back to his Brinsley Schwarz/Rockpile days and playing bass
'what's so funny' is one of my favorite songs.
He was married to Carlene Carter apparently.
That's pretty cool.
Indeed. Check out her Musical Shapes disc.
I LOVE Carlene and have all her albums, just don't get the Nick Lowe thing so much.
The original video for Cruel to be Kind was assembled from clips taken at Nick and Carlene's actual wedding. It's why the shots of the band have 'Textones' on the kick drum--because Nick asked Carla Olson and her band to play at the shindig. Imagine what it must've been like to be there for that.
Nick Lowe is one of the greatest pop musicians of the generation.
He's a good producer as well. (Elvis Costello, Paul Carrack, John Hiatt, The Mavericks, etc)
Nick was of course the bassist in the super band Little Village. I didn't realize that he played with his thumb and a thumbpick.
Nick’s most excellent biography is also titled Cruel To Be Kind, and all y’all should read it.
Imagine having Johnnie Cash as a father-in-law, friend, and someone to jam with. Just those stories make it a worthy read.
