Many years ago my band played a month in Las Vegas. Tom Jones was doing a week long show. We went to almost every one. The guy just sang his butt off.

These clips are from Martin Scorsese presents Red White & Blues
    Great film to watch:

Tom Jones is a pretty good vocalist but that was a poor choice of material.

Mr. Jones was way too Mr. Studly Vegas for those hippies.
It’s almost worthy of an SNL-type parody, a la the “more cowbell” skit.

One only has to wonder at the final disposition of those thousands, upon thousands, of pairs of panties thrown on stage at the Tom Jones concerts held around the world over the years?

About Greg Reeves, he's still around. His work with CSN&Y was outstanding. That kid could play. There seem to be different accounts of why he was let go but he was awfully young to be exposed to the lifestyle.

The best thing bout this video is the way Stills was trying to upstage Jones. Jones seemed to shrug it off with a bemused smile and never lost his stride. I'll call it a draw.

Well, they still must have liked each other. I saw Steve Stills in Wash., DC in the early 70’s and Neil Young came out at the end and they did a couple of Buffalo Springfield songs. The next night I saw them in a little bar in Georgetown I used to frequent, drinking together.

There was a certain image singers like Tom Jones and BJ Thomas maintained.

It was more conducive to Vegas and those musical-variety tv shows (i.e., Andy Williams, Bobby Goldsboro, etc...).

Though even some of the dirt whispering hippy performances of that era may inspire an SNL-type parody. Heh

One would think, but not really in Tom's case.

This Is Tom Jones, the teevee show that ran from '69 to '71, had a slew of non-Vegas-y musical guests. Per Wiki, the show guests included Janis Joplin, Cher, Dusty Springfield, Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Fifth Dimension, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Donovan, The Who, The Moody Blues, Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker... it goes on and on.

IOW, the show booked the top entertainers of the day, mainstream or more fringe. I remember watching it as a kid. The Vegas / man's man persona was unavoidable with Tom, but he was and remains a helluva singer. None of you here has seen the blazing performance Tom did with Janis on the show...? o_O

The OP's vid is great. CSNY was ALWAYS most prima donna grouping ever (up until the Eagles I guess), so seeing them act prima donna-y isn't exactly news. Any one of those guys hardly cared to share the spotlight with any of the others, let alone Tom as the fifth wheel. It's a one-off teevee thing, not a serious performance for the ages. It's supposed to be entertaining, and fun. Which it is.

I gotta run now... there's some whippersnappers matting down my perfectly manicured St. Augustine grass, and I gotta go give 'em what for.

I'm guessing they didn't have to sweep them panties up where Stills was standing. Tom on the other hand, well you know all about that.

That image still thrived on This is Tom Jones TV Show. Plenty of that theatrical Vegas vibe was alive and well ( Not Responsible - Whatcha' Gonna Do).

Jones was a big fan of Little Richard and Elvis, which is fine - both were monumental entertainers, but some influences did rub off on his performances. I could see Elvis substituted for Tom Jones here singing with Janis Joplin, though instead opting for a white jump suit. (shrugs)

Tom has been a successful singer with a powerful set of pipes but the image created (part vegas crooner / hip sex symbol) is just part of the schtick.

Sure, they are great friends. But, Stills couldn't depend on him so he didn't want him in the band. The management team said they'd make more money if CSN had more rock guitar and they talked Stills into adding him.
It turns out Stills was right, Young came and went whenever he felt like it. He didn't seem to care that he was dumping on his friends/bandmates.
